Dear husband and I are veteran cruisers, enjoying 2/3 each year in retirement. We choose our cruises based on a combination of itinerary, pricing, line and time of year, and prefer the smaller ships. It's been nearly 10 years since we cruised NCL, and I read many reviews about NCL and Spirit. To be honest, the entire cruise was better than expected. We had a penthouse suite 10022, our first suite ever, and the pricing was extremely reasonable, especially with the amenities that were included in our price. Our concierge, Monica, was exceptional - always ready to assist us in every way possible, from start to finish. So the "suite" life totally enhanced our overall NCL experience. We were treated like royalty, told Monica where we wanted to eat and when, got escorted to the tenders at those ports requiring them, had dinner with the ship's officers, etc. Spirit is a charming older ship - in overall good condition for her age, though a mechanical problem delayed our leaving Crete by 9 hours, and shortened our time in Malta, which was a port we had really looked forward to visiting. We were unable to take a private excursion to the Grotto as we planned, so settled for dinner by the waterfront as we were only in port from 7 p.m.-midnight. The officers and crew were very friendly and the service was excellent. They also seemed genuinely happy and less stressed than on another line we cruise often. Lots of live music throughout the ship, shows just ok (very typical of cruise ship entertainment), drinks were well prepared (we had the package) - though found it strange that it didn't cover water, expresso or cappuchino (which we knew ahead of time). As part of the suite amenities, we could have breakfast and lunch in Cagney's - it was an efficient way to begin the day on such a port-intensive itinerary. Only downside is that the room we were seated in has no sea views - which are most enjoyable when first arriving in port. We found the food in the MDR OK, nothing spectacular, but it seemed to improve daily, not sure if our expectations changed. We did enjoy two nights in Cagney's, one in Le Bistro and one in Trattoria, as part of our included dining package. Cagney's was the highlight, Le Bistro very good, the Italian place a disappointment. The location is carved out of one corner of the buffet area and the men's room is actually inside the door of the venue, next to the host station. Was expecting a bit more in terms of ambiance and the meals were mundane. We had daily treats in our stateroom that were delicious - and also came back one evening to find our bedroom decorated for our 47th wedding anniversary, as well as a special cake/song at our table that evening. Our butler Jose provided what we requested but was not nearly as helpful or enthusiastic as our concierge. We also attended a VIP cocktail party where we met the Captain and had a photo op - note to NCL, if you are going to invite us to a cocktail party, please provide cocktails! Only wine and champagne were offered, so we didn't stay long. The nightly entertainment in the Galaxy Lounge was fun - a lively but well-behaved crowd - lots of good conversation with fellow cruisers, a real melting pot of people on board Spirit. We most definitely will look to cruising with NCL in the future - and hope to be in a suite once again.

Cabin Review

Penthouse with Large Balcony
Cabin SF 10022
Picked this suite which is starboard side, closest to the forward elevators. We only heard noise one morning early from some boisterous and inconsiderate neighbors who slammed doors and talked loudly when leaving their rooms.

Very elegant, ornate decor - loved having the extra space to spread out and so much storage! Also a real dining table for room service and afternoon snacks. Lighting and mirrors in the spacious bathroom area, which included a double vanity, separate water closet, shower and luxurious whirlpool tub with full glass views of the sea.
Comfy bed - slept very well. Pocket doors and/or curtains can be closed to isolate the sleeping area from the bath and lounge areas.
The "large" balcony was the smallest we have had on any cruise ship or line, ever! Just enough room for two chairs (no lounge) and a very small table. It didn't matter to us on this itinerary as we didn't spend much time out there, but it was super tiny!

  • Capri Walking Tour
The tour itself was fine but over-priced at $229 PP. The only reason we booked through the ship is the logistics of getting to Capri from Naples and that we had lots of on-board credit to use. The guide's husband came along and she was a bit more interested in him than the tour.

Drove all over Rhodes - visited archaeological sites, a ceramic factory, Lindos, and finally, the Old Town.
