Viking Hlin Cruise Review by mvedwards
- Sail Date: July 2017
- Destination: Europe River
- Cabin Type: Veranda Stateroom
Embarkation was like coming home! We were familiar with the layout and rhythms of the ship and the staff make us feel welcome and comfortable. I asked about a particular cocktail onboard and the bartender didn't have one particular ingredient. When I found it in town and gave it to her, she made sure to ask if I wanted my "special cocktail" when she saw me!
Meals on board offered plenty of variety and gave us plenty of opportunity to meet other guests. We were graced with beautiful weather which enabled us to enjoy the outside decks while sailing. The staff made the cruising time very enjoyable and were very attentive with beverages and treats. Going through the locks was a lot of fun, especially when the captain was on deck to talk about the procedure.
The guides for shore excursions ranged from very good to excellent, although we would have appreciated a little less time on formal tours and more free time in the various cities.
The service onboard was excellent across the board! All staff members we encountered were friendly, attentive, helpful and dedicated to a high level of customer service.
We were especially impressed when we had disembarked and were sightseeing in Basel, one of the staff members, on his day off in town, recognized and greeted us! The Viking staff courtesy doesn't end at the end of the gangplank!
Would we take another Viking river cruise? Absolutely! We're already planning our next one!

City TourThe most interesting landmark in Cologne is the cathedral, which was the first stop on our walking tour. This was the same time that every other tour group in the city seemed to be converging on the cathedral and we only wound up with about 20 minutes to see the interior, most of which was spent bumping into other tourists. At the end of our walking tour, the lines were much shorter and it would have made more sense to tour the cathedral at the end of the tour when we would have had more time and fewer crowds to appreciate the amazing architecture.View All 113 City Tour Reviews
