This was our first river cruise and we chose Viking because of its excellent reputation. We chose the Rhine Getaway because we always wanted to visit Germany and since this trip started in Basel, it gave us the opportunity to spend a few days in Switzerland, which is the home of my ancestors.

We very much enjoyed the small ship size (relative to ocean cruising) which allows for getting to know your fellow passengers and the crew. The food and service were excellent and my wife's dietary restriction was handled with ease. The included shore excursions were well organized and provided exactly what we wanted from a cruise. The opportunity to explore on our own without ever being far from the ship was also perfect for us.

Although small, our cabin was well appointed and maintained. We especially appreciated the fresh carafe of water each day as well as other little treats provided upon return to the ship following the day's excursion. Weather was not an obstacle, even though it rained a couple days, Viking provided umbrellas and made the best of what could have been a less than enjoyable day. Also, local entertainment brought on board at several ports added a nice touch to the trip.
