  3. Regal Princess
As experienced Cunard and P&O cruisers we are comparing Princess to these. The Regal is a large well-appointed vessel with 3,600 passengers. The embarkation experience is cattle market style but to be fair we only waited about hour and our bags arrived in good time. The on-board facilities are good with a few exceptions. At times it was difficult to find a place for a drink as the bars all opened at odd times. The dining experience was a very mixed affair. From the buffet breakfast was more like Gettysburg battlefield than a restaurant. At peak times finding a seat was impossible and folk wandering around with plates full of food is not our way of having a great start to the day. The restaurant at open for breakfast closes at 9am, which is way too early if you want to have a leisurely start to the day. The Concerto restaurant in an evening was a different experience. Our staff member who served us dinner every night was a delight. The food was fresh and you could ask for a mix and match from the menu. On formal nights we Brits like to dress to impress with Tuxedo etc. The vast majority of other guests did not bother and in fact shorts even on an evening. The ships staff do not manage the situation and so it’s just left to individuals to set the standard. The entertainment we saw is ‘American’ style and to be honest armature we thought. The cabin was the usual stateroom size but could have been service to a better standard. Leaving the ship was well organised but expect to be off by 10:30 am. We had chosen an excursion to fill the time until our flight. This was expensive and in our experience a waste of time. The other excursion on the trip were a mixture of good and not so good. You can do most things yourself and at a reduced cost. Overall it was average and not to the standard of other good cruise lines. Would we use Princess again – yes.
