Sail Date: Sep 2017

I have wanted to do a river cruise for some time. Having been widowed fairly recently, I felt that for my first solo trip I would like to do something which was a little different from those vacations I had taken with my husband, but was of a fairly familiar format - and unpacking just once won over a tour! I received a splendid value offer for a trip without a solo supplement and so it seemed fated.

Pre-trip information was adequate, and the provision of a backpack to use as hand luggage on the trip and for tours etc. was an excellent touch. The only problem was that the zip failed on first use, but I managed to 'mend' it and keep it going for the duration of the trip.

Flight arrangements were satisfactory - except that in both directions I flew through Schipohl airport in Amsterdam. It is my personal preference to avoid this airport as on every previous trip using this as a transfer airport some or all of our luggage has failed to make the transfer with us. So, I was extremely relieved to be reunited with my case at Budapest airport. And not at all surprised when my case did not arrive with me at my home airport on the return leg! But that was far less problematic than cruising with the contents of a small backpack! This was obviously not under the control of Scenic, but if I cruise with them again I may contact them and ask if an alternative route is available.

Cabin Review

Cabin Category D - standard stateroom

This is a standard stateroom on the lowest deck. It is at the waterline, with a long, high window - sufficient to know if there was something exciting enough for me to need to dash up to the lounge or sun deck to view in detail! It is an adequate size for one, but I think the clothes storage would be a little limited for a couple. The shower room is beautifully appointed, with a superb shower and plenty of storage. Plenty of L'Occitane toiletries are supplied. The bed is comfortable, and there are plenty of soft, supportive pillows, and I believe that alternatives are available. There is a small minibar (topped up daily, but I only used one miniature) and snacks are provided, along with a carafe of water. There are personal slippers and the use of a robe, and a blanket and umbrella to use on the sun deck or onshore. I gather that some staterooms were provided with walking poles, and I am sure that one would have been available for me on request.

The stateroom was spotlessly clean and efficiently serviced by the steward.
