We took a 12 day Scandinavia & Russia Cruise in Aug/Sept 2017 on the Celebrity Silhouette. Both Embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly (but we did respect the time they told us to show up and I think that helped).

Overall the cruise was very good, the atmosphere was more casual than I expected (even in the main dining room dress was mostly business casual with a couple of chic nights). It was enjoyable to be able to eat in the main dining room without always having to wear a cocktail dress (we always dressed nicely but only needed a couple formal dresses).

The food in the main dining room was good, plenty of seafood, chicken, beef, pasta and other entrees to choose from. The wait staff were very good and always got our orders right.

We were comped the Classic drink packages and enjoyed all the alcoholic drinks, coca cola, bottled water and specialty coffee we wanted throughout the cruise. We are not Martini drinkers or that brand driven (so if you are the same) no need to upgrade to a Premium package.

We had a veranda cabin #7289 (unobstructed view) on Deck 7 and found it to be very quiet in general. We were surprised how often the staff were in the hallways with service carts (day & night) but they were respectful. Our cabin steward Elvis was friendly and efficient and kept our room very clean.

We took just a few Celebrity shore excursions (1 to Berlin and 1 in Russia to the Hermitage) and mostly went on our own using local trains (Rostock), the ship shuttles (in Tallinn, Helsinki, Copenhagen), taxis/the HoHo (boat in Sweden). We took a Private Tour in St Petersburg with RedSun Tours (excellent, see separate review) to Church on Spilled Blood, shopping, lunch and Catherine's Palace. If you are well traveled and independent, with the exception of Russia and the Berlin day trip, you don't need to take shore excursions, you can do it on your own using local transport and/or the ship shuttles.

The ships indoor pool was nice but not large and there is only 1 level of indoor deck chairs. Which would have been adequate except for all the fully clothed people who took up all the chairs closest to the pool and would lie there reading books or their devices all day. It made it hard for those of us who wanted to use the pool to get a chair nearby (if at all). The staff never said anything to the people sitting there just reading,

We only went to the buffet a couple of times (mostly for breakfast); the food was good but some days it was hard to find a seat. Some people would not leave their tables even after they were finished eating (there were small signs on the table asking people to do that). But generally we were able to find seats at large tables with other people, so it wasn't a big issue).

Cafe al Bacio on Deck 5 was great for specialty coffees, pop, water and desserts, we went at least once a day.

We had read reviews that said this ship was older and the decor a little drab. While it is true that this ship can't compare with some of the newer/larger more elaborately decorated ships it is still a very nice, clean, comfortable ship and we would go on it again.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Veranda 2B
Cabin 2B 7289

Cabin #7289 was a comfortable size and had a nice balcony, In general it was very quiet but we were surprised how often the staff were in the hallways with service carts (day & night) but they were respectful. Our cabin steward Elvis was friendly, efficient and kept our room very clean.

The balcony was a decent size and had a table & 2 deck chairs. Sometimes I could hear the crew talking because they would gather in an area 1 deck down (Immediately below our balcony) and talk on their cell phones but I could only hear them if I was sitting outside, not from inside the room.

It was a longer walk to the elevators/stairs but we deliberately chose to be farther from those areas. Although the deck map doesn't show any storage rooms near this cabin there was a room that the staff went into/out of frequently a couple doors down from it. It wasn't a major annoyance but we specifically tried to find a cabin away from such areas (and thought we had) but they seem to be everywhere).

Overall though a good cabin and I would stay in it again.
