In September 1998 our family of 6 did Celebrity's Alaska Cruise on the Galaxy. At that time Celebrity had a reputation for being "above average". Their prices reflected this, being a bit more expensive than other lines doing the same route. We found the reputation accurate and enjoyed the cruise satisfied with the standards and happy that we received good value. Sadly, this time, 19 years later, we have to rate our cruise experience as "below average". Not that we have any serious complaints, but numerous minor shortcomings added up to overall dissatisfaction. Individually these minor points could be called "nit-picking" but other passengers agreed that, they too, felt somewhat dissatisfied. In analyzing the comments of others, we notice that their negative or positive comments depended on one of two factors: Those who were positive and happy with the cruise were "first time" cruisers and those who were negative were "experienced" cruisers. Although Celebrity bear the weight of these comments, I suspect all the "mass-market" lines (leaving out the obviously "luxury" lines), are all guilty of similar neglects in maintaining previous standards. Why? Larger Ships. It is obvious that the larger the ship - the worse the service! We have seen it happen to the airline industry and now the same rot is setting into the mass-cruise business. It is ironic that cruise passengers may expect a larger ship to provide more space for larger, more comfortable, cabins. But the truth is by cutting down the size of a cabin by just an inch or two, the ship can squeeze in more cabins. (This was obvious in the Infinity.) First time cruisers will not notice this - no doubt a marketing factor recognized by the Company. So as this is supposed to be a review of Celebrity's Infinity, the bottom line is: If you are a first time cruiser - no problem - you will probably love it. If you have experienced trips with other companies and other ships - you won’t sail on Celebrity again.
