We did our first river cruise in August on the Viking Egil. We had a pleasant time but not an exceptional time. Wee were very frustrated by three things: 1) we had received a $200 referral credit from some friends who had used Viking but the credit never showed up in our account despite a call to Viking in June confirming the amount and our our August cruise. Certainly feels like Viking pulled a fast one. The worst was that they refused to respond to multiple requests for an explanation. So, caution is warranted when dealing with Viking. 2) Unlike most of the guests on board, I am not retired and needed to work each day for a short period of time. The ship was advertised to have wifi but in reality it barely worked at times. Its 2017. This could easily be remedied by Viking...but wasn't. 3) the beds were not very comfortable. I expected something a little more hotel-like.
The tours were very good and the guides were generally great. You can probably get something similar on the getyourguide app.
All in all, it was nice but not great. They pulled a fast one with the on-board credit. You could easily rent a car and do a similar trip for a lot less money but the convenience of a cruise will appeal to many. Maybe we'll do another river cruise one in 20 years.
Small. Clean. Not a very comfortable bed. The wifi did not work well when it worked at all. The TV worked at times. At other times, it did not work.
