Sail Date: Jul 2017

As we live in Yorkshire, it was easy to access the Port of Hull for our departure. We had already sailed on the Marco Polo to Scandinavian Cities from Tilbury, but this was so convenient for our trip to Norway. The ship is over 50 years old and has character. It was immaculately clean and great emphasis is placed on hygiene. The staff are wonderful and the formal dining experience is excellent and we much preferred that to the self service restaurant. The staff knew us as individuals and called us by our names when they encountered us anywhere on the ship. We were placed with two other couples for evening dining and it says a lot that we are all booked to travel on the Marco Polo in 2018 for various itineraries. We thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment and there were various activities during the day for those wishing to partake. We did not use any of the ship's excursions, but sorted out our own, which were cheaper. I am surprised that there are not more positive reviews for The Marco Polo, as the general feeling was one of satisfaction and every day, we could see people booking future sailings.

Cabin Review

Adequate size, reasonable amount of storage space, immaculately clean. Two single beds, which were comfortable. Rather dated, but so am I. Think the no. was 440. It was below the Captain's Club and each night, we were woken between 1.00 and 1.30 a.m to the sound of the cleaner humping/banging the furniture around. I actually got up to go and see what was happening. It made no difference, he kept doing it for further nights. We have booked a different cabin for next year.

Port Reviews

Stavanger

It was a Sunday when we docked at Stavanger and it was heartening to find that the small Tourist Information office was open. We got some brochures and then went off on the hop on, hop off bus tour. We also visited several of the museums, including the Petroleum museum, canning museum and Maritime museum. It seemed that if you paid for one, you received discount on another or even free admission. The old town is lovely and we also visited the Cathedral. Everything was easily accessible and we found plenty to do without going on an organised excursion.
