Wonderful cruise, ship, service and experience

Sail Date: July 2017
Destination: Panama Canal & Central America
Embarkation: San Francisco
As wary cruisers we wondered if we were risking too much committing to a 29 day cruise?

Not a problem at all!

We selected a cabin midship with no balcony and found we had plenty of options to sit quietly on deck if we chose to. Being low and in the middle, our cabin was very stable and we had a smooth journey for 29 nights. Reports of wild weather nights surprised us.

The cabin was spacious with a large wardrobe. Did not use the bath but great shower. Somewhere i read of complaints about the shower stall being "too dark and small to shave legs"!! Maybe if you are half blind, overweight and wearing sunglasses. Ridiculous criticism...

The complimentary guest laundry was very useful - don't take too much as it is convenient to use.

We did not wear very formal clothing at all. Some brought out the diamonds and full length crystal dresses but absolutely not necessary. Dress as if going out for fine dining.

Fellow travellers were More mostly 55+, many European and Australasian and many we never even saw! Only a very few children (6?). The second part of the cruise had a different mix of guests with more high end Americans who largely kept to themselves.

The quality of the food and drink was exceptional. The selection was outstanding. One could dine on fillet steak and lobster each night if so desired... included wine selection very good with no need to buy list wines (and we are hoteliers/winemakers so very fussy).

The staff were all very professional and friendly.

Reading some reviews to date I am amazed these people were on the same cruise? Perhaps small things can escalate for some people but we found any small concern was quickly and quietly remedied with no fuss. Complaining about poles on a dance floor that is used for formal dancing by about 8 guests? We loved the dance floor later at night especially the Beatles night! Just be aware that you will hear the moaners and groaners. Stay away from them as a large group of us could not have been treated better nor had a better cruise experience.

Shore excursions a mixed bag. As we pre booked so long ago some we chose not to go on by the time they were due. Long days in hot humid places were challenging. Some people had great experiences, some not so good. If you don't like what is on offer then book a private tour. Easy! Concierge service excellent - some booked shows in NY .

Entertainment varied if that's your thing. Lots of activities of your thing. We loved sea days to relax and enjoy the sea air, read and chat. Others need stimulation and entertainment with plenty of that on offer. Good spa facilities. Intention to use gym not eventuated!

All the fellow travellers we interacted with thoroughly enjoyed their cruise. If you travel with an open mind, show respect to the staff who only want to please and be thankful for the opportunity to experience this level of luxury, you will love Navigator! Great ship, just the right size for us and being all inclusive could not have been better value. Less

Cabin review: F526 Deluxe Suite

No balcony which was of no issue to us as we used the main decks when there was good weather or something to see. Huge comfortable bed with gel mattress and feather pillows. Slept like babies. Large bathroom and wardrobe. Very stable and quiet. Bar restocked with whatever we wanted (eyes bigger than stomachs). Wide range of online movies, good wifi, in room service anytime and anything off the menus.

Port and Shore Excursions

Roqueta Walking Tour

Cliff divers, walk up island hill, lunch at beachfront hotel and swim. A good day

Catamaran Cruise

Had to tender which is always a bit messy and time consuming. Cruise OK. Then onto a bus and off to glassblowing factory (in the stinking heat). Everyone bored to tears and just wanting get back onto airconditioned bus. Drink stop at beachfront restaurant very nice. Drive to San Jose with guided walk which we escaped from. Ordinary lunch then back...

City Tour

Extremely hot day so the old fortress was a challenge. Very little shade. However loved Cartagena old and new. Church visit too long as there were any more interesting places to see. Enjoyed coffee, cigar and cerveza when we had spare time

Not the place's fault. Just not much there at all. Day trip to old and new Leon very hot and quite dull

Peggy's Cove

Got to see Peggy's Cove. Tick. Half day so had time to wander around old Halifax and port which was interesting

Bit of a Disneyland. Took the Conch train to orientate ourselves. Chose outdoor restaurant to watch world go by. Sloppy Joe's of course!

Empire State Building

Taken to see Manhatten skyline light up at dusk from Brooklyn then to ESB. Queue. Queue. Queue. Not the tour's fault but I guess a once in a lifetime experience. Got the tshirt. Free time at Times Square was way long enough....

Very interesting to learn of British colonisation of US and the scene of ultimate revolutionary war. Thought Pocahontas was a Disney character...

Kennedy Space Center

Did not realise how easily I would be engaged by NASA. Incredible interactive experience. A huge highlight

Day trip to Antigua very interesting. Could do without the fillers like jade factory and would have liked more independent time but understand the responsibility the guides have to get everyone back safely. Not everyone on a tour has a sense of awareness of place and time!

Cloud Forest National Park

A long long bus ride over very winding roads. The intrepid sky bridges were not at all what we hoped for. Very low key. Hummingbirds interesting. Poured with rain of course being in the cloud forest but did not see any other birds or much of interest. Most of the time was sitting on a cramped bus.

A long day in a bus but saw lots outside of Quebec. in retrospect would have easily filled in a day wandering around old Quebec ourselves. Ended up with a brief 30mins in old Q
