  3. Viking Hlin
After sailing on more than a dozen ocean cruises, my wife and I took the plunge on a river cruise. Our only regret is that we did not do so sooner. From the time of initial conversation with a Viking booking representative through completion of our journey in Amsterdam, our Viking experience has been awesome. We traveled to Basel on our own a full day before the Hlin's departure, staying at the Hotel Wettstein (highly recommended because of its location, price, and superior quality). A side note, many fellow Hlin passengers arrived in Basel the day of departure and to a person were suffering from lack of sleep after long trans-Atlantic flights. To do justice to the entire experience on the Hlin, I would need to write pages and pages. Therefore, I will only provide highlights: The ship's staff consistently went out of its way to assist every person on board. Not only were they professional and personable, but made you feel you were the most important person on board. The Hlin is a well maintained modern, clean, and quiet vessel. Public areas never felt crowded, and with floor to ceiling windows, one felt as though you were outside to enjoy the wonderful sights. Our cabin was on the Main deck (deck 1) with only an approximate 24" by 48" window. Because of the bird’s eye view it was the best cabin on the ship. The cabin was better than most upscale ocean cruise ship cabins. Dining was a pleasure, with varied and plentiful food. Our fellow passengers came from all socioeconomic levels; however, the caliber was significantly higher. The stops and sights were awesome. A previous reviewer had written "always have your camera with you", truer words could not have been written. Persons with mobility issues should not be dissuaded from taking a Viking cruise as the staff was observed going to extraordinary lengths to assist and accommodate. Would we go on another Viking river cruise, that process is already in the works. The hard decision is whether we do the Danube or Provence first.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Stateroom
Cabin F
The cabin more than met our needs and wants. At no time did we experience any outside noises as has often been the case on ocean cruises.
