We always wanted to try a cruise around the Norwegian Fjords. This was to be our first real cruise, excluding the 2 nights 3 days short cruises in the Far East, so we wanted something that wasn't too long and this cruise seemed to fit the requirements. The cruise itself was very good. The crew and staff friendly, the ship was modern and there was a lot of entertainment choices. The food on the whole was excellent and several shore trips and long walks helped keep the waistline in check. What wasn't so good was the loud and rude behavior of a large number of the passengers, some of whom thought it perfectly acceptable to talk loudly during musical performances, screw anyone else who might be actually trying to listen and enjoy the show. Even sitting down for a drink in a lounge where singers were entertaining the audience, we had a senior crew member in uniform, talking away loudly to a chef in uniform, which was an unnecessary distraction. I mean, if you have to talk business, why not find a quiet place and do that in private, without upsetting the very people who are in essence paying your salary? But other than the rude loud passengers and the ones who refuse to control their young children and one who openly put her 2 year old kid on the table tennis table and bounced him up and down and the few that barged into prime viewing photo taking positions, pushing out people who had queued for over an hour in cold windy conditions, it was a pretty decent cruise. I guess I just need to be a little more patient with the poor little darlings who want to see how many times it takes to whack a table tennis bat against the edge of the table before it breaks, after all, I kind still play with half a bat and ignore the chunks of table on the floor. On a more positive note, do your homework before paying for the cruise shore excursions as there can be better and cheaper options at the ports themselves.

The cruise itself was very good. The fellow passengers were not.

Cabin Review

Cabin 7556
Decent sized cabin, just the toilet shower was a bit cramped for space. Requested a quiet cabin away from the entertainment noise so ended up being just above the pub with a nightly singer and his guitar which finished at midnight. This was a much better option than being near the centre of the ship near all the nightly shows which tended to be quite noisy.

  • Alesund
We just walked around the port area and did a little shopping. I cancelled the cruise ship tour "Walking of the trolls" which I was told later was excellent, because we didn't want to spend 6 hours or so on a coach.

Took a coach ride through several scenic spots to a fruit farm. Doesn't sound particularly interesting but the plate of apple pie and cream was worth it alone and the rather amusing commentary provided by the fruit farm owners was a bonus. The icing on the cake was a stop at a waterfall (sorry cannot remember the name) where you can walk behind the waterfall and take some rather splendid photos.

  • Hiking Westeras
Just about made this 2 km hike up to Westeras and the Storsaeterfossen waterfall in 1 hour. Took about 40 minutes to come down and had some waffles at the farm at the base of the hike. The views were well worth the hike, plus it had the added advantage of eating into some of the weight gain made on board the cruise.

The very first tour booked with the cruise line and I immediately wanted to cancel the rest. Luckily I didn't cancel all as the others were very good.

This scenic tour was basically a 90 minute odd train journey past various scenic views of water, but no photo taking opportunities other than out of the window of a fast moving train, a 90 minute stop at a small fishing village with a handful of shops to look around (in the rain) and a 90 minute coach ride back in the opposite direction with 1 stop to take some pictures of cows sleeping in a field near the coastline. Walk around Stavanger itself or book a tour onshore and avoid this particular tour unless you like sleeping on trains and coaches.
