We are long time cruisers (Mostly Celebrity) who were traveling with a group of friends. One couple in our group had a 10 year old child and thought the children's DreamWorks activities on the Oasis were desirable. The rest of us had wanted to try the mega-ship cruise experience. So we all ended up on the Oasis for a week in the Caribbean.

My husband and I have been cruising for almost 20 years. We cruise at least once a year and usually two. We prefer relaxing days at sea and usually gravitate toward two+ week cruises on Celebrity. Over the years we have tried a couple of RCCL's smaller ships, and a Viking River cruise with groups. Our cruising style is laid back. We enjoy concerts, lectures, good food and service and find Celebrity fits us well. Let me say at the beginning, comparing this experience to Celebrity is somewhat unfair since they are both owned by Royal Caribbean and marketing decisions have to be made my the parent company to differentiate the two brands. RCCL markets to families with kids, and Celebrity markets to an older demographic with few kids. However, since the overwhelming preponderances of our cruising experience is on Celebrity this is what I will compare it to.

Embarkation and Disembarkation: This was our first time cruising from Port Canaveral. We spent a couple of days at Kennedy Space Center and really enjoyed ourselves. If you like the space program and are going through Port Canaveral, we highly recommend you take a few days to go to the Space Center. We stayed in Cocoa Beach prior to the cruise. Orlando is the nearest airport but it is at least an hour from the port. Cocoa Beach has clearly been negatively impacted by the NASA space shuttle shutdown. It seems to be stuck in a 1980's time warp. RCCL has their act together in the port. Both embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly. RCCL has re-instituted the Luggage valet program. For $25PP they will take your luggage from your cabin and check it in to your final destination. The next time you see it is on the baggage claim when you arrive home.
