I just returned from my first river cruise. My husband and I, along with four friends, cruised the Rhine River on Avalon's Felicity. We loved it. As advertised, the ship was small but beautiful. The two main interior public spaces (the lounge and dining room) were both very comfortable. Our cabin was small but nice, with a very comfortable bed. The food was very good. Service was outstanding. The crew was friendly, and nothing was too big an ask. I was surprised at how fast paced the itinerary was. We were on the go from 7:00 AM until we fell into bed exhausted. But the ports were beautiful and interesting, and I loved every minute of it. My only very minor criticisms are: the bed pillows need to be firmer, and I was disappointed that the wine served on board did not include any of the very fine wines from the Rhine region. However, we just purchased our own wine, and the dining room staff served that instead (no corkage fee during dinner). Despite Felicity being an "older" ship, it felt new and luxurious to us. I didn't mind the bed not facing the wall because I fell asleep as soon as I went to bed!
The cabin looked just like the pictures on Avalon's website. It was cozy, but had plenty of storage space. We rarely had the slider open, because in port, we were either right on shore, or next to another ship. But, on the few occasions the slider was open, it was lovely. The bathroom was tiny, but nicely appointed. I loved the toiletries.
Strasbourg was beautiful, and the included canal boat/walking tour was perfect (even in the rain). This is a place to which I will return.
The included city walk tour was excellent. Cologne was heavily bombed in WWII, so it is not as pretty as the other stops on this cruise. However, we had a fun lunck in the Market Square.
The included canal cruise and walking tour was excellent. What a charming city!
