I have been cruising exclusively on NCL for about 17 years, Latitudes Platinum status. For the first time in over 20 cruises, I was disappointed. It was my first time on the Breakaway and it felt like all they cared about was money, money, money. What happened to "all inclusive?" Everything costs extra. It's only all inclusive if you eat in the dining rooms, the buffet or O'Sheehan's Pub and drink coffee, tea, iced tea or juice. Limited TV channels, but you can buy a movie on pay-per-view for $9.95 - you're screwed if you get a rainy day, which we did have. The ship is huge, but all the extra space went to staterooms and not to public areas. It felt very much overcrowded. There was only one small pool for 4000 guests (as compared to the Epic, which has a separate adults only pool/sunning area). All specialty restaurants now carry a cover charge, but it's pretty much irrelevant, since you can't get reservations at any of them unless you book it the minute you get on board. As a Latitudes Platinum member, I am entitled to two free dinners at certain specialty restaurants and am also entitled to priority reservations, but was not able to book anything at all by the evening of Day 1 and guest services staff seemed unconcerned. Same goes for the shows...you have to book immediately. The only good thing with the shows is that they allow you to book "Stand By" and you can usually get in 10 minutes before showtime. All that being said, the ship is beautiful , the food was good and the staff was, for the most part, very friendly and helpful (there were a few unpleasant people but that's to be found anywhere). Embarkation was excellent - ample security lines to keep the wait to a minimum, Latitudes priority check-in - no wait at all. Within 20 minutes of our arrival at the pier we were on board. Disembarkation was a bit slower, but all in all still pretty quick. Rock of Ages was excellent (but not appropriate for children), as was Burn the Floor, but the magic show was pretty lame. Second City, as always, was hysterical. Fitness facilities were good, but $20 for spin class was a bit much, especially when the spin instructor insults you at the end. I've always cruised NCL in the past but this one has me thinking twice about it. Sorry NCL, you've put money ahead of your guests.

Cabin Review

Balcony Stateroom

Rated the cabin average because the balcony was very small and our cabin steward, although very nice, was not very thorough. We found several items under the bed from previous occupants, the bed was made rather sloppily, we had to call to request beach towels, waited over an hour for them to be delivered and they were not replaced with fresh beach towels the entire week. On the last day he neglected to replace the spare toilet paper roll (good thing we didn't need it!). Limited TV channels, which makes for a boring day if it rains (which it did one day). Pay per view movies? Another way to put more money in NCL's pockets at the expense of the guests.
