We were told by others that everyone on Holland America would be much older than us (44 and 42) and that the food and service wouldn't be very good. Apparently others can be wrong. We had a great time, with plenty of people our age and good food and service. Embarkation in Seattle went very smoothly, with no lines anywhere getting onto the ship at about 12:30pm. The ship was always on time, service was great, and the shore excursions were well organized. Room service was great, and if doing breakfast in your room, we always just wrote in what we wanted (normal eggs benedict, waffles, extra bacon) and always got what we wanted, so you don't have to stick to the limited menu they give you. Some highlights: 1. The Tamarind restaurant is amazing. The food and service were top notch. The Tamarind bar is under utilized but has amazing views if you are looking for a quiet drink. 2. The entertainment, although not stellar, was pretty darn good. 3. The kids club, although we only used it once, was great. We are pleased to see that Holland America is thinking of the young kids, even though it may cater to a less youthful crowd. 4. EVERYONE was friendly. Usually on a cruise ship, you meet a few people who shouldn't work there. We didn't see anyone on this cruise that was not trying their best. 5. Babysitting was available upon request - we managed to get two nights (one of our kids was too young for club HAL), and the hourly price was less than we pay at home for our babysitter! 6. This was our first HAL cruise and loved that we could order room service and stay in our room until called on disembarkation day. We usually go Celebrity (pre-kids) and I don't recall being able to get room service on the last day. There were a couple of things that could be improved upon. 1. The lido buffet was an absolute zoo on most days. There was rarely a table available and it made for an unpleasant lunch when we were trying to find a table with a one and three year old in tow. 2. It is normal to have crew from many countries onboard and meeting those staff is a highlight of the cruise, however, phones for room service should be staffed by those who are able to communicate well. 3. Pool rules. We had a three year old who loved the pool, and an almost two year old who wasn't allowed in because he is not toilet trained. Totally understandable. But when families are letting their less than one year old in the pool without even a swim diaper and then changing diapers at the edge of the pool, it makes one wonder why we stick to the rules when others don't. Enforcing rules would be appreciated. Overall it was a great way to travel with two little kids. They LOVED the choice of food, and our daughter was in heaven with the bunk in the quad person room (cabin 5008). HAL surprised us! Great cruise!

Cabin Review

Deluxe Ocean-View Verandah Stateroom
Cabin VB 5008
Great four person cabin. The veranda was a good size, and we loved having a bathtub instead of the shower found on most cruise lines. Storage was ample. The only small concern is the location so far near the front of the boat. With two small kids, it made the walk to food a bit long sometimes.
