This was my wife and my 3rd cruise (Carnival & Royal Caribbean previously- both in the Caribbean). This trip was a late Birthday gift to my wife who wanted to cruise in the Mediterranean, following a 2 week visit to France.
We organized our own shore excursions and bought none of the pricey ship offered ones.
In general the ship appeared to be older with mediocre décor but it was easy to get around within the ship. I have read numerous reviews related to lack of elevators/long waits ... we did not experience that.

Naples
We visited the city on our own. Used hop on hop off Bus service available within the city.
Rome (Civitavecchia)
Again we organized ourselves with a 1 hr + train trip from Civitavecchia to Rome.
Florence (Livorno)
Again on our own with a 1 hr+ train trip to get to Florence
Cannes
On our own ... did the hop on Hop off bus and visited all the major sights of Cannes.
Palma de Mallorca (Majorca)
Organized our sightseeing ourselves.
