Viking Homies is an exceptional cruise visiting 8 different countries with emphasis on Norway where we started, plus 2 full days ashore in classic historic St Petersburg Russia. Lots of interesting optional tours which most often conflicted with the free included walking or "panorama" tours as Viking describes bus rides. Our first time in the Nordic countries so we did everything possible within port time constraints. Another first was insight into life behind the Iron Curtain from guides in our visits to East Germany, Poland, Estonia & Russia. A wonderful learning experience. Tours are well organized and fit many interests.

Food is very good but short of excellent. Specialty restaurants are superb, but your tastes must be eclectic to enjoy the unique menus changing every 3 days at the Chef's Table. We loved it. Some don't. Check the posted fixed menu.

Steaks etc. at Manfredis Italian specialty restaurant are world class. Great pasta etc. sides. The classic Restaurant is always available if you want a relaxing, served business casual dinner similar to the river ships style. Alternatively, dine informally up top at the buffet style World Cafe with the best views. To my complete surprise, my wife really enjoyed the many, many selections at the World Cafe. The only shortcoming is that some of the dishes are occasionally not served hot enough. Using cold buffet plates exacerbates this problem. I suggest finding a way to dispense warm plates and better IR heaters or something over the hot dishes. Meat dishes are carved to your liking. Never got to try the sushi bar. Too many choices at the World Cafe. Waitstaff is attentive and works to please.

Cabin Review

Penthouse Veranda Stateroom

Cabin PV1

Love the Penthouse Veranda because there's extra maneuvering space between the foot of the bed and the TV credenza. Also extra credenza space for the papers, stuff and whatnot that accumulates during the cruise.

You get 2 reservations in each of the specialty restaurants in advance, but since anybody can get reservations as the cruise progresses this is not a big issue.

Another extra is the mini-bar stocked with your favorite selections.

Port Reviews

Eidfjord

Full-day to Flåm Long ride thru fascinating under the mountains tunnels to the countryside. Got out to enjoy several waterfalls close up (wet). Fun train ride through the mountains on 2 different era trains.
