Our family of five sailed on the May 16 sailing of the Getaway out of Copenhagen for the 9 day Baltic capital cruise. We had the ultimate beverage package as well as the dining package. Overall, a great trip, strong itinerary, impressive ship and we were blessed with some great weather.

Day 1 – Check in was very smooth with no lines. We arrived around 11:30 and could get right on the ship. However after a smooth check in and photo stop, we wandered onto the ship and entered over a poorly marked gangway with no one to greet us. After touring the ship (we had previously been on the Breakaway so we were familiar with the ship), cabins were ready at approximately 1:00. Luggage arrived shortly after that. We had two cabins: a balcony cabin and a mini suite with large balcony. The large balcony was very impressive. This would be ideal for a warm weather cruise. Our only disappointment was our cabin for three was only prepared for a cabin for two, not making our third guest feel very welcome. The large balcony cabin was 8716. It was perfect for us, but it was pretty far from an elevator if you have mobility issues. The muster drill was at 4:00. This was our 20th cruise and it was the most disorganized muster drill we’ve been to. Long repeated delays, asking everyone to be quiet and pay attention, followed by no information whatsoever. It didn’t inspire confidence if there was ever a real emergency. Dinner that night at Moderno. We think this is the best specialty restaurant value on the ship. We don’t understand why it’s never that crowded. The first night in any specialty restaurant is quiet, but we really never saw it that busy any night of the cruise. Excellent salad bar, almost justifies the cost of the meal alone – broad selection – specialty cheeses, lobster bisque, sushi, not to mention the 11 different kinds of meats served table side. A great meal to start the cruise!

Day 2 – Warnemunde. Early arrival, guided by fire boat streaming water from its cannons celebrating the Getaway’s first visit there. We booked TJ Travel bus excursion to Berlin, where we met them right at the pier. We were unsure whether this brief stop would be worth the long trip to Berlin, but in the end we think it was (we caught up on our sleep on the bus!). The TJ tour guide in Berlin, Theo, was excellent and we were able to see more and learn about Berlin than we thought possible in such a short time. We arrived back at the ship about two hours before the ship sailed, giving us time to walk into Warnemunde, which we found surprisingly charming. It’s definitely worth the brief walk from the ship. Back on board, we enjoyed a late dinner at the Shanghai noodle bar, which was wonderful (and a free dinner option). The weather was sunny and warmer than usual.
