The highlight of our cruise was supposed to be Istanbul, and some other turkish port of calls.
While I almost saw that coming given what was going on in the rather stressed out area, H-A Lines decided to pull out of all the Turkish port of calls in the very last days just prior. They did this while other cruise ships still went there. The trip was shortened about about a 1000 miles and the substituted the port of calls with Albania. Frankly that part was not only a cheap shot, it was the biggest disappointment of the cruise and for that reason, I would never return to Holland America. They turned it into a major financial advantage in their favor and that is not acceptable to me. The ship itself is old fashioned, and the entertainment very weak and boring. The dining and service was great, the cabin good, the location of the stateroom outstanding (thank God for that). The atmosphere was kind of not charming, stiff, cold if you will.
Would we go again, with the modified itinerary which were imposed on us, the answer would be no, and as far as the cruise line itself, well there is better (Celibrity for example, so far is our front runner).
Our cabin was on the 7th deck, all the way in the rear of the ship. Given the the nature of this cruise being constantly close to the shore, it was a no brainer for us to chose a cabin with a open terrace, unobstructed. It was THE VERY BEST DECISION we ever made, and it was ABSOLUTELY THE HIGHLIGHT of our cruise, the entering and exiting from the port of calls, absolutely fantastic views every single day. The cabin for that matter was typical for cruise ships, spacious enough, you kind of get what you're paying for.
