EMBARKATION

• Getting to Rome Civitavecchia was very inconvenient, very far from city centre. Rome train station have confusing and poorly labelled signs so it took 30 minutes just to find the platform. Need to catch train to Civitavecchia, then walk 10-15 minutes to the port then catch a bus inside the port.

• Terminal to ship: was good.

Great layout, great bathroom and showers.

Port Reviews

Naples

This port is one of the most annoying for accurate transport information to get to places. The port is 30 minute walk to the train station or you can tram (which is also confusing to find out which route to take), which you can catch a local train (ask for directions for the platform, it took us a while to locate it as signs were not clear) go to Pompeii or Sorrento. The train is non aircon and dirty. Naples is also the port to go to Almafi coast and Capri island, so it is hard to choose.

If there are more convenient transport and transport information, I would rate this 5/5 as it serves as a gateway to many great sights in Italy.

Athens (Piraeus)

Not enough time at this port to explore everything.

Getting to sites was okay but can be a bit confusing for people if they don't have GPS/mobile maps/internet. We caught a hop on and off bus from the port and walked to the Arcroplis areas followed up long queue and very expensive tickets to go inside. A lot of culture and history, so a tour could also be beneficial here or you should read up before hand.

Ladies: be careful as the marble floors can be slippery, some lady slipped on the stairs and it looked painful.

Santorini

Google Santorini travel expectation vs reality. You will take some post card worthy photos but only on CERTAIN angles and locations. The blue roof buildings are not everywhere. There is large crowd even early in the morning for the photos of the postcard Santorini shots. Getting around there is the Donkey (if you are short, your legs will not reach the stirrups and it is very hard to balance - I thought I was going to fall off the cliff when going down hill). Alternatively, there are speedboat and buses you can book at the port. Otherwise you can take a excursion. You can also walk. This is not a good port for people with prams and kids as there are stairs everywhere.

The cruises leave before the sunset ... great sail away, but no sunset photos of the blue roof churches.

Nevertheless, a romantic destination. Read my reviews.

Rhodes

This is one of the easiest port to navigate. You can literally walk off the ship and go around the island and back. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Colossus of Rhodes, however this is now pretty much eroded. There are castles and some great places to visit on Rhodes. I liked this port.

Mykonos

One of my favourite ports in Mediterrean.

This is one of the easiest port to navigate. You can literally walk off the tender and go around the island and back.

Very scenic, get off the ship early to avoid crowds and take some photos in the walkways. Beautiful houses and churches throughout. It has a more intimate feel compared to Santorini. There is good night life at Mykonos but we went back to the ship in the afternoon as it was too hot.

Taormina (Messina)

It was complicated to get to Taormina from Messina, we took train and bus combination together. Some good views at the top of the hill.

No shops were open on the Saturday at Messina during morning and afternoon, I was hoping for ice cream ...

Rome (Civitavecchia)

Very far from city and very inconvenient to get to. Italians need to work on better signs and roads (to avoid carrying luggage up and down stairs).

Pack light!
