This was our first cruise on the Jade and we chose it mainly for the itinerary, the bonus was that she was sailing from Southampton. Check in was a little chaotic but it was the first NCL check in at Southampton for a while, actual embarkation was smooth and quick. We had no hand luggage so were free to eat and discover the ship. We've been on the Gem twice and the Jade is very similar. The shop all in one place was a great idea and meant you went when you wanted and didn't have to walk through it all the time. The Atrium with Guest Services etc. wasn't somewhere I felt I could relax but there were plenty of other places.
Our cabin was lovely and after a trip on the Epic it was nice to get a bathroom back. The staterooms are a bit on the small side but we only ever really use it for sleeping and it was well looked after as usual.
My wife loves to eat in the MDR so we ate there most of the time, the food was good, the service could be a little slow at times, although we did eat in the buffet, which I was impressed with, the layout seems to have sorted out the problem with queues, the food was fine but finding a table was a bit problematic. Jasmine was great, food excellent as was the service.
My biggest gripe with the trip was the activities and the availability of the bars. The Daily sheet always appeared to be full of things to do but on closer inspection a lot of this was info regarding the opening of equipment hire. The timing of the trivia, which we enjoy, was poor. The morning trivia on port days was usually 11:15 am and most people don't usually want to wait until dinner before they go ashore. Now that NCL seem to give away the UBP to most passengers they have resorted to not having bars open as an effective way of controlling costs. Don't misunderstand, there was always at least one bar open most of the time, but often only one, activities were scheduled in bars that were not open, especially evening trivia. Once the bars were open the service was excellent, as it was in the restaurants. The shows and other items in the Stardust Theatre were polished and professional, which seems to be the norm with NCL.
The itinerary was excellent a mixture of interesting towns and cities mixed with trips down majestic, beautiful fjords, even the cancellation of one stop due to the weather didn't affect brilliance of the itinerary. Most stops were easy walks to the centre of towns etc. So we only had one excursion.
We are confirmed NCL fans now and maybe a little more picky than we were on our first cruises, but this was yet again a fantastic cruise overall and as usual we made new friends and really enjoyed ourselves.
Well kept and clean. USB points a nice touch.
