We treated ourselves to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. We had always dreamed of going to Hawaii, and I just can't express how beautiful it is there. The cruise was an excellent way to see an overview of the islands. (This is only our 2nd cruise ever.) We agree that the food was wonderful. The Aloha buffet has a huge and varied selection, and we could always find plenty to eat that we enjoyed. To address other reviews, we didn't find it short on meat at all - unless you pretty much only want meat. Another concern about which I had read was that the omelet station was crowded. There are 4 omelet stations. All are open at the busiest times. The first morning it was shortly after 10:00 AM and only one station was open, so we had to wait a bit. But learning the way it worked, we got our omelets faster after that. One day we were in a big hurry so we chose other hot foods, but it didn't bother us because there was plenty to choose from. We ate at the Aloha mostly, as it was almost always serving when we were ready to eat. We also enjoyed the other included restaurants - they are great for when you have more time. The captain made a point to alert us when we passed the lava flowing into the ocean at night, so that anyone who wished could see it. Also, when we passed the Napoli coast - WOW! Again, we were all alerted to see this amazing sight. Lots of history and information is given to explain each. We did lots of excursions: a 5-pack bundle from Roberts Hawaii because it was so affordable, and one of the Norwegian ones because it was the only way we researched to get to walk on the lava fields and look for molten lava. We highly recommend Roberts Hawaii - nice buses, nice guides, great information...just one guide who wasn't the friendliest. The one ship excursion, Kiluea lava field expedition, was excellent though a long, hot hike. Ashley was our excellent guide.

Great cruise overall!

Cabin Review

Mid-Ship Balcony
Cabin BB 8124
The only negative about our cabin was that the sink drain line leaked. At first it leaked significantly, soaking towels under it - not flowing fast but dripping fairly often. After reporting it 3 times and having it worked on 3 times, it still leaked a little, dripping occasionally onto an extra towel on the shelf. That was workable for us.
This cabin's balcony view is unobstructed. I was so happy to see that for myself! I had seen a video of cabin 8114's view and was hopeful, since we upgraded to a balcony but didn't choose our room. Great view!! Be wary of the view from 7th deck balconies - the lifeboats are stored there.

Otherwise the cabin was just as pictured and we certainly thought the additional $200/person to upgrade to a balcony room was well worth it. It was delightful to watch the lava flow into the ocean from our own balcony!

  • Kilauea Walking Tour
Ashley was our excellent guide - fun, very skilled and knowledgeable! First she drove us to a park area and we got out and looked, and made a few other stops. Then we went to the site where we walked the cooled lava fields to see where the molten lava flows into the ocean and creates a huge cloud of white smoke! Intermittently we could briefly see the pink/red lava itself. We had never seen or walked on a volcano so this was unforgettable. Be aware that it's a long, hot hike (almost 5 miles round trip) and rain is possible, so wear sun protection! Walking back to the van is uphill!! It's worth it though.

  • Waimea Canyon
We did the "Journey to Waimea Canyon". The tour was excellent - driven on a big bus to the canyon with some other stops. The canyon was completely amazing! I could have just stayed there looking at it, if not for time to return and all the sun exposure I'd already had on my fair skin.
Our guide, Tito, was very knowledgeable but not the friendliest guy ever.

My husband says - If you think you want to book a helicopter ride on Kauai, do it early (after checking on their cancellation policy) even if it looks like rain the day before. The company will tell you if it's not a good day. We didn't book for fear of rain, then there was no availability when the weather cleared up.

  • Snorkeling
This excursion, called "Tide Pool & Reef Exploration", consisted of transportation to and from a great snorkeling site, where we were dropped off with a pickup time. We saw lots of sea turtles and beautiful fish during the 3 or so hours we were there. On the way back to the port, the driver was kind enough to let us off at a good local shopping site and we walked a few blocks back to the port.

  • Haleakala Crater
comfortable ride on a full-sized bus with an excellent guide, David (Kawika). The crater was fogged in so we couldn't actually see it - bummer - so David went down some so we could get good sunset photos.

  • Maui Tropical Plantation
David (Kawika) was our great guide again. He knows just about every plant and fact! The tour also included a land tram through the plantation which is great. I didn't think I was that interested in plants and fruit trees and flowers!
