We chose this cruise as we had travelled with Scenic in New Zealand and enjoyed it. This river cruise however was rather disappointing. We had paid for the Diamond deck - the most expensive - with a balcony. Although the cabin itself was very good, the use of the special balcony was somewhat limited as we were either docked alongside other boats or facing a wall. Waking up to see the view into someone- else's cabin window was totally unacceptable. On one day the whole ship was in darkness as not only the cabins but the lounge and dining room were also looking into other ships. This "Scenic" cruise was far from scenic in the first few days as the view while sailing was of chemical works, power stations, docks with container ships The choice of included excursions did not really reflect the age of the passengers on board with virtually all trips including various levels of walking, even when you thought you had booked a bus trip. There was not enough detailed information about what each tour comprised of and the canal cruise in Amsterdam included more time driving around in a coach than on the actual canal cruise. The trips were also very rushed with most back by 13.00 and sailing between 13.00 and 15.00 meaning only a short time on the excursion and no time to explore the place we were actually moored at in the afternoon. On the last evening we were all taken to a local church for a meal and conversation with locals. Again we had to leave before anyone could have coffee as the ship had to sail at 20.15 - even though we were moored in the next port at 4.00 am. Why couldn't we have left an hour later? Most disrespectful to the locals who had put on the catering. (Would be interested to know how much Scenic paid for the event as the didn't provide a meal on board) With regard to catering, the brochure implies there are 2 main dining rooms - Crystal and River Café, but River café is a corner of the bar counter, not a separate room. The waiters didn't explain that there we could order special breakfast items from the kitchen other than those on the buffet - such as poached eggs, steak, waffles etc and there was no menu on the table. We found the buffet hot food to be cold so complained and it was then much hotter the next day. The best entertainment was the night they did a music quiz and disco, every other night being the same piano player/singer - ok but much of a muchness The staff were fine though the some waiters were obviously new and still learning. The ship was very clean and well maintained
