We chose the Sky specifically for the inaugural cruise to Cuba. We were on this ship on it's first cruise out of Europe in 1999. It is an older ship and much smaller than the new mega liners. However she is clean and since her dry dock, has had many upgrades. Still the lay out is our only real issue. It is not easy to get from some places to the other there is no real main walk through area, most bars seem dark and small, the casino is crazy small and confined making the fact that it is smoking really difficult for others to even get near. Food was average as most cruise ships are these days. The sushi was excellent. To bad it is an upcharge. Some ships have a few rolls every night as appetizers. The French restaurant had an amazing 32 oz steak for two. It was huge and perfect! This was the only place were our service was below par. Our server was very distracted and not to pleasant but we still enjoyed our meal.
Their were many VIP's on this cruise as it was the first for NCL to Cuba. Cuba was very interesting. The first day we did an excursion, the second day we did Havana on our own and enjoyed that much better. I think NCL will tweek the excursions as they continue this port of call. Do NOT worry about safety or language while in Cuba. The people were so kind and we never felt uncomfortable. Cuba is like any other island when ships began to visit, Belize, Dominican etc.
I very comfortable cabin. Our only complaint (and this is for many of the older ships) there is only 1 receptacle. Come on.....with everyone's electronics, this has to change.
It was frustrating that the staff did not have anything set up for almost 2 hours after we arrived on the island. No drinks or food. I know this is unusual for them but still was disappointing. The island is relaxing and beautiful.
