The itinerary for this cruise is perfect. An overnight in Cuba and then a stop at their lovely private island. Being the lst cruise, we expected that there would be some issues with disembarkation, immigration, excursions but there were no problems. NCL had its act together for this inaugural event. The Sky, while older/smaller than others in the fleet, was immaculate and the staff were upbeat and friendly. There was a show every night with either the dancers/singers or the comedian. Both were very good. Getting thru immigration was no more difficult than in any other place and after your passport is stamped, day 2 is a breeze to get off. We booked 2 NCL excursions which were really good; Vinales Valley (an 11hr outside of Havanna tour) and a walking tour of Old Havanna where you visit 4 historical squares each with different architecture and history. The guides on the NCL excursions are highly educated and their English is great. Our guide was a professor at Havanna Univ before becoming a guide and another was a civil engineer. We were really glad we booked our excursions with NCL. We had no long waits to get into the complimentary dining room and no problems with getting drinks from the bar or at the show. The only reason this is a 4 rating rather than a 5 is the food at the buffet FOR DINNER was not that good but the buffet is fine for breakfast and/or lunch. The softie ice cream at the pool deck is one of the best I've had. Cabin was immaculate albeit "dated" and balcony can only accommodate 2 chairs and a tiny table. Highly recommend this cruise.

Cabin Review

Balcony
Cabin BC 9258
Space was adequate for 1-3 people. Balcony small. Bed very comfortable. Great location because you are 2 floors below buffet/pool deck and 2 floors above dining rooms and casino/shopping. Sometimes we could smell food (possibly because you are close to stairs) but not all day long; just short periods. Good cabin location.

  • Viñales Valley
Day 1: We did an 11hr bus tour to Vinales Valley about 2 hrs outside of Havanna.  Visited a rum factory and a cigar farm where the farm manager looked like a character out of Crocodile Dundee but even neater.  He wore these leather -like clothes which were all dirty and kinda greasy.   He explained their farm business (Govt gets 90% and they get to sell 10% on their own); but it is more like 90/20% as they have figured out a way to shield an extra 10% from the Govt's eyes. He had a huge knife in his back pocket, pulled that out and rolled a cigar for us.  He gave it to the sole cigar smoker in our group. Then we went to a scenic overlook with a salsa band and dancers and had lunch at a farm to table paradore/restaurant.  Even though a 2 hr drive to get there it was not riding along in silence as our articlulate, highly educated guide briefed us on Cuba's 4 revolutions, their economy, the benefits they receive from the Govt and their way of life. On way back drove by Havanna Univ; Revolution Square and other historical places. A most wonderful excursion if you don't mind the 2 hr bus ride to and from.
