Definitely Not 5* Modern Luxury

Celebrity Constellation Cruise Review by Julmnous

  • Sail Date: Apr 2017
  • Destination: Asia
  • Cabin Type: Deluxe Ocean View with Balcony 2A

We travelled through the Suez Canal on Celebrity Constellation in April this year and we were very disappointed with the ship and the amenities. The ship is in need of modernisation. Unfortunately, all the marketing hype of '5* Modern Luxury' does not apply to this ship.

As soon as we stepped into the our balcony cabin (7083) we found it small and very cramped. There was nowhere to store our suitcases. The shower curtain in the bathroom felt old and unclean. The air conditioning did not work efficiently, even though the engineers kept telling us that it had been fixed. The toilet paper onboard was wafer thin poor quality too.

We had the Classics Drinks Package. Even though spring water is on the list of drinks on this package, bottled filtered tap water from India was offered. When I brought this to the Chief Barman's attention I was told that this was the only water onboard. After protesting, I was offered bottled filtered water from Abu Dhabi instead!!

The food was the worst food we have ever eaten at sea. The Ocean Café never changed the labels of the dishes. Every single day, except the last day, there was Rockfish and Chicken, presented either as grilled or in some Asian sauce/curry, with a roast of the day. Unfortunately, the food was very, very monotonous and the Manager was not interested in any feedback. The only reasonable choice was the salad bar! The main Dining Room also had a very poor choice on the menu, albeit a la carte.

We went to the wine tasting which has now been cut back to miniscule amounts of wine already poured into glasses and laid out on the table. Not worth bothering with at all!!

The other noticeable downside that Celebrity are now doing is not providing any information about the upcoming ports of call for independent travellers. We did not have a clue about where the ship was docking or how far the nearest town was from the port.

Everywhere seems to be geared towards trying to get passengers to pay for something extra: whether it is for speciality restaurants, shore excursions or other shopping. Very disappointing!!

We do 6/ 7 cruises a year on average. To date this year, we have done 3 cruises with Celebrity, 2 on Infinity and this one on the Constellation. The Infinity also fell well below our expectations of what a Celebrity Cruise should deliver. We have a further 3 cruises booked with Celebrity this year, 2 on the Millenium and 1 on the Eclipse. We have given Celebrity feedback about our concerns on all these cutbacks. Let's hope that they take notice of their customers. Unfortunately if we do not find the quality improving this year, we will sadly not be cruising with Celebrity again.
