This was our first-ever cruise. We were very happy - and relaxed - the whole time. We did not do any ship-sponsored excursions, preferring instead to go ashore. I didn't like the ports right by the ships, where it is obvious they are trying to wring money from the onslaught of us tourists, but I cannot complain about that if I choose to go there on a cruise ship. If I never see a Diamonds International store again that would be great. I do blame ourselves for not trying harder to go further. Next time, we will stay FAR AWAY from that stuff. We just didn't really do a good job our first time visiting those ports.
That said, we thought our cabin was very comfortable, plenty of storage for two people, very nice furnishings, the shower was great, toilet flushed everything in sight, never a smelly moment as we feared. We loved our balcony too. Just no complaints with our stateroom, would use that very one again. We also were amazed that we never heard any of the folks around us. We had a nice quiet room.
We LOVED the Ocean Cafe. Amazing. You could lock up on choices - so many!!!! Always something delicious - maybe the last day the lunchtime lines were discouraging, but what are you gonna do - they made a massive variety of cakes as chefs special and EVERYBODY came to get a slice!!!
The St. Maarten we saw was a step up from St. Thomas. At least there was much more variety among the stores. Somewhat more attractive than St. Thomas, but that would be easy to achieve.
We rode the ferry to Hamilton, walked around a bit. Enjoyed seeing the town. But I REALLY enjoyed riding the bus back through the island(s) and seeing real people (school girls, a soldier, grandmothers, etc.) get on and off. I thought the bus was a GREAT way to see the island. It's included in the day pass (ferries & buses.)
We made a point of walking up to a beautiful golf course, but we would have had to rent everything to play. Instead, we enjoyed a nice drink on their clubhouse patio and a terrific relaxing view. Best moment in any of the ports for us.
