My wife and I, like so many others, chose Viking Ocean because of our wonderful river cruise experience. The ship board experience did not disappoint. The ship’s smaller size (less than 1,000 passengers) enables it to get into ports that are too small for the mega cruise ships. It’s modern décor with lots of causal settings was greatly appreciated. The service was excellent and the food was outstanding (no additional charge for beer and wine at meals). We especially enjoyed the informational lectures and port talks and the absence of photographers, casino, art auctions, waterslides, nickel/dimming, etc. that accompanies the larger ships. There were few children on board which kept the ship very quiet and peaceful. The age group Viking caters to is older and are generally more interested in a relaxing educational experience rather than a giant party.

Our cabin was roomy, quiet and comfortable and the staff was very accommodating to our needs. Wi-fi was free and we could usually connect without difficulty. The bathroom was a very pleasant surprise. Room service was available 24 hours per day at no additional cost. We took advantage of breakfast our first morning and it was delivered on time, with everything at the correct temperature including the coffee. We were disappointed in the in-room coffee maker, but the fridge was restocked every day (at no cost).

The entertainment was a real surprise (all geared to over 50’s) as the singers and dancers were of a high quality and Ray Michaels, the cruise director, charmed the audience every night. We loved the classical ensemble that played in the atrium most evenings. The music was beautiful and created just the right atmosphere for the beginning of an enjoyable shipboard evening.
