We arrived two days early in Rome which gave us time to explore that city. On departure day, we took a train from Rome to the port. There was confusion as to where to meet the shuttle bus. It would have been helpful to have Viking representative or Viking signs at the train station. Once on board, the experience was wonderful. There were only 900 passengers so no waiting on a lounge chair, dinner table, or breakfast buffet. The night entertainment was perfect for us starting at 9:15 and over just after 10 p.m. The staff everywhere on the ship was helpful and attentive. Viking hosted a mix and mingle just for Cruise Critic members which was a great opportunity to meet face to face to those you had only read Cruise Critic comments. Again the staff did a very nice job of hosting and serving Champagne, non-alcoholic drinks, and hors d'oeuvres in the Explorers Lounge. We found the food to be very good in all restaurants. We did breakfast on our veranda three mornings and it was on time and hot. The Cruise days were very relaxing and Viking offered sessions such as cooking demos by the Executive Chef, Salsa dancing dance lessons, and a fragrance workshop. We did not attend any of the Enrichment Lectures nor unable to attend the afternoon tea which was said to be very good. We did not do any of the "free" shore excursions because they all seemed to be panoramic and we wanted more. Our favorites were Tunisia and Algeria. Being able to explore and touch all of the ancient ruins were amazing. The people were incredibly friendly. We did a Viator tour in Malta since we had been to this island before. With Viator, we were able to customize exactly what the 4 of us wanted to see. All of the Viking tour escorts were knowledgeable and friendly. We especially liked our tour escort in Algeria and the visit to the ruins. He was a retired archaeologists so his knowledge was immense. We were able to pass by one of the sites that he had a major part in uncovering. We had a 8:00 a.m. departure in Barcelona and were able to take our luggage off by ourselves immediately after docking so that we could make our early flight. The ship docked at 4:30 a.m. and we walked off into our waiting ride at 4:45 a.m.

Cabin Review

Cabin 6066
There was adequate storage in the closet (I did bring disposable hangers with me) but could have used a little more drawer storage space. The coffee maker in the room was a little complicated but manageable. Loved the heated floors in the bathroom. The balcony was adequate but enjoyed sitting in the atrium in one of the ocean facing lounges. Enjoyed breakfast in the room on mornings when we had an early departure.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Malta (Valletta)
The four of us had a Private tour of Malta. We went to the old city of Mdina and the new capital. The contrast of the two cities was very interesting. Our guide allowed us to customize some of the trip to our desires. We visited the Co-cathedral and to the Mosta dome where a bomb went through the ceiling in WWII into the church filled with over 300 people. The bomb did not explode and no one was injured. A miracle.

We did the catacombs during the day because it was not as cold in the catacombs as outside.

We did a skip the line tour of the Colosseum and were able to go underneath and to the very top. It was very informative and exciting.

  • Pantheon
The rotunda inside the Pantheon is beautiful as is all the paintings on the wall. Because we did this tour on our own, we did not gain additional information on the site.

We also did this on our own. We took subway to Vatican City, back to Trevi fountains and the Pantheon.

We did this on our own so we did not get all of the historical information but just climbing the steps to the top was memorable.

  • Trevi Fountain
Beautiful to see but very crowded. It was hard to get a good shot of the fountains because there were so many people. Still worth getting close to such a beautiful fountain.

It was fascinating to walk among the ruins that were 3,000 years old. French influence is still visible in Tunis.
