We sailed on Splendida in January, we have sailed on her before and she lived up to our expectations. If you are looking for a recommendation then there are a few thing to consider before you choose MSC. If you want the English or American experience then read no further, if you are looking for a cosmopolitan cruise where you will meet several cultures and nationalities then it's worth a try. The ships are high end quality when it comes to design, very modern and sparkling. but the price you pay will be reflected in the food etc. you can get ships that provide high end food but this does come at a price.
The size and quality of the cabins are some of the best I have had in many years of cruising, but don't expect expensive toiletries in the room only basic requirements. The cabin was kept spotlessly clean and there were no stains on the walls and carpets that I experienced on some "English" ships. The balcony was a good size with nice table and chairs.
In the restaurant we were as usual seated with English speaking guests, the food was good quality but if you want lobster etc. you will need to pay a top up fee or visit one of the onboard speciality venues. There is plenty of choice on the menu and always two alternative dishes. The meals are not large but there are 5 to 6 courses and if you ask for extra for example two main dishes this does not cause any problems. We also used the MDR for breakfast and lunch if we were onboard as it is a bit more sedate than the buffet, you are assigned a seat and have a choice of either menu with waiter service or serve yourself buffet. We did not use the buffet very often but that was just personal choice, a lot of reports seem to say it is a problem finding a seat; but there was always room towards the back of the ship or dare I suggest you share with a stranger and have a chat.
Very clean, good size with a sofa and balcony
Embarkation port
Done Rome many times so spent some time in the town, good shops and nice sea front
Walk-able from the ship, we love the place its very interesting but a bit of a culture shock if you have not been before. Worth having a meal out but try some of the smaller venues off the main track
You can walk from the ship up the slope to the left then the steps through the gardens, it is a bit steep so beware. There is also the alternative of a lift/elevator for just a euro and it takes you up to the city level
You can walk it but it is quite a way and will take some, remember the city is big and will take a lot of time to walk round so it is better to take the shuttle. this is also a good place to eat out.
May be it is just me but have been here before and was not impressed so had a day relaxing on the ship a walk to the local shops on the port
