We were 3 adults, my husband, my adult daughter and I, going on this cruise, July 12, out of San Juan, going to Aruba, Curacao, Dominica and St. Thomas.  My daughter had the cabin next to ours, 8230.  The cabin crew was extremely attentive, as when by about 9pm, I still didn't have one suitcase on the first night, went down to the holding area and found it and brought it to me personally.  Our cabins were clean, decently done, plenty of room for our things and although I bumped into the glass balcony door every time I got out of bed, were pleasant enough.  It was so hot outside, that using the balconies was totally out of the question. We had a few definite feelings about the ship; the staff; the Royal Caribbean ship line, and the excursions.  We are seasoned cruisers, although this was our first time on this ship line.  We have traveled on 5 other lines.  We found the sailing comfort on the ship to be somewhat rocky.  The water wasn't calm; the ship rocked from side to side every minute that the motors were turned on, and we were definitely uncomfortable although we took precautions with medicine, etc. We have never had this shaken-baby-like syndrome feeling before on any cruise we have taken. Some of the food was delicious, such as the Osso Bucco, and some was awful such as the wilted salad, strong, dry salmon and tough steak.  We enjoyed the Portofino Restaurant tremendously, although our appetizer, an eggpalnt rolatini dish, was overcooked and tough.  The rest of the meal was served beautifully and tasted heavenly. We chose the Dining when we wanted, so that left us the opportunity to go when we wished although reservations were still needed in advance.  It worked fine, just that we were placed at a table on the rim and railing of the diningroom  which  proved to be in the middle of the transportation pattern of diners coming in and out of the diningroom.  We asked to be moved, and were put into a dead corner of the room, with a rather pompous waiter, who tried a bit too hard to please everyone around us.  Eventually, everyone around us left and we sat in our corner alone for the rest of the cruise. But he tried and that's I guess what counts. The excursions that we took were in Curacao, Dominica, and St. Thomas.  They were initiated in the hot sun of 100 degree heat outside on the dock, sometimes waiting for at least 15-20 minutes, and were misquoted as to their severity.  "Moderate" certainly didn't describe the tremendous number of steps up and down muddy wet steps to the Trafalgar Falls of probably 300 steps, in 100 degree heat WITHOUT any railings!  Gorgeous sight.  But be aware that it isn't "moderate" walking!  We then went on a short climb of about 30 steps to see the hot springs, which we then drove by.  Why we had to climb to see them, I still haven't figured out.  The sights are marvelous, the nature breath-taking and the foliage is unparalled, but it's certainly not described accurately in RC's paperwork.  Ask if you have any problem walking so many steps. The Curacao excursion we took was the Jewish Heritage and History of Curacao Tour.  We totally enjoyed that tour, learning so much about early Curacao up to today.  We thoroughly  enjoyed each place we saw and left it feeling much more knowledgeable. The St. Thomas excusion was a tour on the back of an oversized pick-up truck with a trolly type top and open sides.  I didn't mind the bumpiness at all, but my husband wasn't thrilled with it.  It was interesting and scenic and we enjoyed the places the driver took us.What can I say about the cruise in general?  It wasn't one to remember with fondness.  The RC philosophy just wasn't what we had hoped.  Liquor was being sold from 7am until the wee morning hours the next day.  Getting a chair, or lounge chair wasn't always possible by the pools. The waiter in the dining room wasn't our favorite and since we had changed once already, we didn't want to change again  The boat didn't seem to have enough stabilization and we were all most uncomfortable for several days after we got home  There just seemed to be a lack of warmth all around us; in the shops; in the various areas of the boat. There was lack of seating at the buffet when they closed the dining rooms at lunch and you were lucky to find a few empty seats with other people who didn't mind us joining them.  The waitstaff at the buffet was less than stellar.  They were mostly untrained people, who just stood around and chatted among themselves until a section captain came around and spoke to them. The entertainment was excellent, but didn't take into consideration than some people might have not wanted to hear a rock group, the Mosaics, for one evening.  For the younger people, including our daughter, it was perfect.  We would have liked an alternative.  I guess our age is showing!  The ice show was superb, the singers and dancers terrific, the tour director was unbelievable good and probably Broadway material, and the comedians were delightful.  Even a human water spouting show was hilarious.  All in all, I'd like to think of the positives, but this cruise had too many negatives.  We've travelled the world, on land trips as well as cruises, and I found that I had to continue reminding myself that this was supposed to be "fun, pleasure in the sun", and a "vacation to remember"!  What I seem to remember was that it wasn't "fun, pleasure, and one to remember" although there were wonderful places to see, a beautiful ship when it stood still, and kind, caring cabin staff whever we needed or wanted anything.  Many of the other staff fit into the kind, caring staff as well.  When someone took ill, the captain turned the ship around and brought the ill man to Guadaloupe on a night time unscheduled stop. Kudos to the Captain!  We'll leave this cruise to the axion" it was what it was" and leave it as that.

Cabin Review

We were on Deck 8  cabins 8228 and 8230, toward the bow of the boat on the starboard side.  It was a quiet location, although there were little children near us, we didn't hear them.  The cabin crew was terrific!  Each of our cabins had a balcony, but the terrific heat outside precluded us from using them.  Our bed was too close to the glass doors of the balcony, so I bumped into it every time I got out of bed.  There was a standard toilet, shower and vanity with an adequate medicine chest.  We had plenty of storage space.  We didn't use it all.  I can't say we stayed in our cabin much, but when we did, it was ok.  I guess we were near the crew space, but I wasn't aware of them being there.  Our cabin attendant, Errol, was extra special, and we took extra good care of him at the end of the cruise. If only the boat didn't rock from side to side so much, I would have been a lot happier, especially at night.
