Golden Princess Cruise Review by helenpaw
- Sail Date: January 2017
- Destination: Australia & New Zealand
- Cabin Type: Oceanview (obstructed view)
Embarkation was smooth, on board within twenty minutes as Platinum members.
Cabin on deck 8 spacious and comfortable. Loved the walk in robes. Shocked to discover needed adaptor for shaver and chargers. Cabin steward provided but had to request.
Missed the usual slippers and extra toiletries supplied on other Princess cruises.
Cabin steward kept our cabin immaculate and always seem to know when we were out of the cabin. One surprise though, our bed sheets appeared not to be changed in 13 days.
TV was old, could hardly see the screen and remote didn't operate from bed.
Chose any time dining. Always managed to get table for two with little wait time. Food was good but didn't think it was of the same standard as previous cruises. "Bombe Alaska" presentation on last night was a joke. Artificial Bombe Alaska's and nothing like the fun and frivolity on previous cruises.
Entertainment was average and the theatre crowded with people standing. Appeared not be monitored by cruise staff as on previous cruises. Cruise director still telling the same jokes we heard when we first saw him on previous cruises. Dancing shows we had seen several times before. We only attended a couple of shows.
Too ill to attend the Captains cocktail party for Elite and Platinum members, but they are always the same.
Stores and boutiques on board were boring and overpriced.
Photographic staff are the most annoying people on every ship.....seem to think its ok to stop you in pouring rain. We let them take as many photos as they like and never bought any. If prices were reasonable people would buy.
Same with "Effy" advertising. Relentless and annoying
Tendency to constantly upsell. Ship staff tell you its not possible to take water off the ship in your own refillable drink bottle. they want you to purchase their bottled water. Its not true and custom staff never ever objected.
Spent more time than usual in our cabin due to illness so it was good that our beds were comfortable and room service was excellent.
I was surprised there were no lounge chairs on promenade deck, in fact it wasn't used much by people walking or relaxing possibly on account of the weather.
Library was non existent and only four chairs and its shared with the internet usuers Take your own books. Sea Princess has a much bigger and better library
Our cruise to New Zealand was disappointing in that the weather was appalling. Milford Sound 8 degrees and Dunedin 12 degrees, pouring with rain and foggy. In Port Chalmers we got absolutely soaked transferring from the ship to tour bus and had to endure wet clothes and shoes for half a day. No wonder I became ill, which since arriving home discovered I actually had influenza A virus and two weeks later still recovering.
Cant control the weather and we did miss Akaroa due to gale winds, but quite frankly by then I was to ill to be disappointed.
Cabin, Dining and Bar staff are incredible. International Café was great. Good coffee and snacks.
Casino great and staff friendly.
Shore excursions expensive and you don't get a refund if you are ill and cant get out of bed to attend.
Did attend a couple of lectures on board but didn't see the point of an American chap giving tips on retirement to Australians. His advice just didn't apply to us and I wondered why he was hired to talk to passengers. He didn't understand Aussie superannuation queries
Disembarkation process smooth and transport back to airport very good.
Would I travel on Golden Princess again? Yes, but not to New Zealand, next time somewhere I can be reasonably be guaranteed its not going to be 8 degrees in the middle of summer.
Unfortunately being so ill on the ship due to weather conditions left me extremely disappointed with New Zealand. January is supposed to be a great month there.
Cruise sector was great, land sector very disappointing.
250,000+ people have entered their email
Excellent hanging space and storage. TV not good. Bad reception and cant change with remote control unless standing under the TV.
Incredible beds, so comfortable and so were the pillows. Would have liked to sheets changed at least once during the cruise.
Shower cubicle was the smallest I have ever encountered on a ship and looking at the size of some passengers I wondered how they coped.
The cabin was always quiet. Close to elevators.
Had to request breakfast order forms.
