  3. Star Princess
This was our first time on Princess after six cruises on Celebrity. If the 'Star' is representative of the Princess product it will probably be our last. First I'd like to say the staff was great. Everyone went out of their way to make the trip enjoyable. However, the staff can only work with the resources they are given and someone at the corporate level seems to have taken costs savings to a new high. The portions in the main dining room were unusually small and usually over cooked (scallops and lobster tail like rubber). The only ice cream we found outside of the dining room was on deck 14 by the pool. It was soft serve vanilla and chocolate and at best it was ice 'milk'. We ended up eating more evening meals at the buffet where you could at least make yourself a decent salad. The paper towels in the public restrooms were coarse and brown like something you would find in a backwoods gas station. Instead of hotel style individual soaps and shampoo there were large pump bottles of body wash and shampoo in the shower. The other couple we were traveling with had been on Princess 9 other times but not for a couple years. They were quite shocked at how much it had changed. We go on a cruise to feel pampered and 'special'. So many little things screamed 'cheap' that it really detracted from the cruise experience.

Very Disappointed

Cabin BB B301
Room steward was great. Bed should have had a new mattress a long time ago. Steward found a foam egg crate for us to smooth out the bumps which helped.

  • Volcano National Park & Hilo Waterfall Tour
We boarded our tour bus and proceeded towards Volcano National Park with a stop at the Moana Loa Macadamia Nut Factory enroute. Our guide was very informative. We drove through old lava fields and saw steam vents. When we arrived at the summit of Kiluea we were given 30 minutes to view the small museum on site and the crater. There was a little activity in the crater with sporadic spitting of lava from one of the vents.

  • City Tour
We had been in Honolulu many years ago; but, had never seen the Arizona Memorial. The city tour was nice with several stops around town. As on Hawaii, our tour guide was very informative.

  • USS Arizona
We arrived at the Arizona Memorial with time to eat lunch as well as view the many plaques around the area. The movie prior to traveling over to the memorial was informative especially with so much news reel footage. The memorial itself was very moving.

  • Waimea Canyon
A long ride for a rather short visit to the canyon but the view was great. A very windy road so be prepared if you have a tendency to get car sick.
