I have frequently taken the RCCL Majesty of the Seas on the 3 day weekend cruise and have always loved that ship. Now that that ship isn't available out of Miami anymore, I was pleased to see the Empress of the Seas is now available. Several things made this ship better. First and foremost - Non-Smoking Casino!!! Also, some very nice seating areas around the pool (I am not comfortable on lounge chairs and have always wished there were more sitting chairs, and this ship has several areas, one in the middle, shaded, with very comfortable chairs and some small tables; as well as many tables and chairs in shaded areas, and a coffee/water/ice cream station outside as well). A hidden gem is the Boleros Lounge - great atmosphere, very comfortable seating, great bar -- and a great place to watch the sunset (when heading somewhat due east). I do wish they featured more varied music, rather than just latin (but it is Cuban-themed, after all). The food was extremely good, the best I have had on RCCL, and the entertainment was terrific. The itinerary was also great, as we had a day at sea rather than Cococay (which again has very little seating other than the very uncomfortable lounge chairs), and it was 4 days rather than 3 (which is sooooo much nicer). The cabins are still small, though, and they don't have the shelves in the closet. Tip: I found out too late that you are permitted to take one bottle of wine per person, with no corkage fee. This must be new, as I never saw that before.

Cabin Review

Cabin Don't know.

The cabins are notoriously small, but that typically doesn't bother me. There were more drawers than similar ships, but I desperately missed the shelves that were in the closet of the Majesty.

Key West

I love Key West. We took the Conch Train Tour (always a delight), toured the Butterfly Conservatory (very nice). We were told to buy our Butterly Cons. tickets at the same time as the Conch Train for the best price, which we did. However, we found that we would have saved 75 cents on the adult ticket and $3.75 on the senior ticket had we waited and used the coupon in the booklet they gave us. However, when we brought it to the attention of the ticket booth, they refunded the senior's ticket in full, so kudos to them.
