We had friends who raved about their experience with Viking. We had never been to Germany or Amsterdam and this sounded like the perfect way to travel. Unpacking only once and boarding a cruise to enjoy the landscape of European towns, vineyards and castles while cruising the Danube, Main and Rhine was one of the best vacations we have taken. I usually plan all of our travel details in depth and this time Viking was in charge. What a fantastic job! From the very beginning of making our plans to arriving at each stop with fantastic local guides, Viking was absolutely amazing. We were so spoiled.
The ship was spotless and our room had a fantastic attendant. The tour director was energetic and so much fun. We ate dinner nightly with friends on the Aquivit served by a dedicated staff who made our evenings special.
We were informed about the next days activities the night before via a pamphlet. It was helpful for planning and also when I was organizing pictures once home.
We chose a room with a balcony. Our room was fantastic. Our attendant was so sweet. The bathroom shower was scrubbed daily.
Amazing ! Fantastic pictures for my album.
We had not been to Salzburg, so we spent the day in Austria.
Loved this city. We had a great guide and then quite a lot of time on our own. Our tour director had set up a time to meet at the Cuckoo clock shop...fun. Would love to return someday.
We began at the castle and had a lesson of history. Then wound our way to the lower town. After damage from WW11 the church of St. Sebaldus has been restored. Beautiful. We also saw a mechanical clock on the Church of Our Lady and the Market Square, fun murals on a government building. Then viewed the sobering sights of Hilter's rally grounds, grandstands and parade marching area.
Known as Little Venice on the river Regnitz, Bamberg is built on the river and on 7 hillsides. It escaped bombing in WW11. A famous building on the river is the Altes Rathaus/ Old Town Hall has murals on it's sides. The Cathedral is a UNESCO Heritage site since 1993. Loved this town!
Wurzburg Residence was amazing. Huge inside with beautiful gardens, it was restored after severe bombing in WW11. Walking into the main part of town, there are churches, open areas for shopping, interesting lanes to investigate. The bridge over the river also has picturesque views of a Fortress. Fond memories of this town.
I have been on so many Italian wine tours. Have seen the harvest from the vineyard to the final tasting room. So this was a disappointment,
I also could not get Wertheim in this spot. We stopped there before KLoblenz. Loved the guide and the town. Amazing high water marks due to flooding over the centuries.
