Viking Star in port
Evening leaving port, just before dinner.
Many snorkeling opportunities on this Caribbean trip. This sea turtle swam

We had been on Viking River cruises before, which were fabulous, so we signed up for this Caribbean Island hop on one of Viking's ocean ships, with just under 1000 passengers. The ship is lovely, and our cabin was excellent. Food was good as well.

After the charming old San Juan, there the first couple of islands on our itinerary didn't have much to see. Things improved though as we moved along. The entire cruise director / activities thing was very different from any other cruise we had been on. The cruise director participated in evening entertainment as a singer and emcee, but we didn't see or hear much else out of her. The port talks in the theater, which she hosted, were scheduled right at 6 PM when dinner started. Whose idea was that?

There is much reliance on their snazzy electronics to support the evening entertainment in lieu of traditional props, etc., so it was always singing and dancing by a small group against a projection screen backdrop. A comedian, or mime, or juggler, or something different would have been a nice addition. The pop tunes cover band was mediocre at best, but the classical trio (cello, violin, flute), classical guitarist, and pianist were all superb. Couldn't get enough of them as they rotated through several venues every evening.

Cabin Review

All but the suite cabins are identical. There is little reason to pay more for a higher classification. Our cabin, which was booked at the next to the cheapest price, was in a fantastic location and was excellent. In particular, the bathrooms are the best I've seen on a ship - more like a hotel bathroom. King bed was very comfortable and was a true king mattress, not two mattresses pushed together. TV remote was cheap and very unreliable. All the other passengers complained about the remotes as well. We don't watch much TV on a cruise, but every night after dinner, when we entered the cabin, the TV was blaring with a recording of port excursions, and we had to fiddle with the remote for awhile to get the darn thing turned off.

Port Reviews

Guadeloupe

Just outside the cruise port, you can walk through an interesting market for locals to buy seafood, vegetables, etc. Some tourist trinket sellers as well, but the fish being sold right off the little boats was pretty cool. They also sold bottles of rum punch flavored with all manner of things, and fresh spices.

Guadeloupe

More to see on this island, such as a unique cemetery.

St. Lucia

Decent morning at a small beach, but beaches seem to be scarce on this island, and this one was fairly crowded.

Antigua

Very nice beach near the cruise terminal. Found a local shared taxi and had a lovely 3 hours there in the afternoon.
