Had never been on a cruise and friends recommended a river cruise, specifically Viking. Viking staff took care of everything from the moment we arrived in Nuremberg until they saw us off at the Budapest airport. The room was clean, looked quite new, and was well designed and appointed. It was great to unpack and stow the suitcases under the bed until departure. All aspects of the room were well designed to be compact but allow for room to move around, store clothing in drawers and closet, and take care of all bathroom needs. Had a nice view through the sliding glass door. The ship itself provided for reading and computer usage in a library, indoor and outdoor dining, a lounge for entertainment and socializing, an upper deck with seating and several games, a concierge to help with sightseeing plans, and a person in charge of all the tours and activities, with a daily briefing in the lounge so that we always knew what the next day held. The dining was excellent, with options that included full meals, light meals, and snacks as well as soft drinks, coffee, tea, and a full bar. For each meal there were many options to include coverage of all tastes and diets; everything we ate was well prepared and seasoned. Shore excursions were varied and included tours of towns, cities, and abbeys/cathdrals (including an organ concert in Passau), a ferryboat ride, and making strudel, as well as a variety of optional activities.

Cabin Review

Cabin French Balcony

All aspects of the room were well designed to be compact but allow for room to move around, store clothing in drawers and closet (plenty of room for two persons' clothing, and take care of all bathroom needs. The heated floor in the bathroom was nice. The shower was compact but well appointed. We had a nice view through the sliding glass door. It was quiet in the room--i.e., no noises from other guests or the ship. There was a TV with available programming and wifi (in the room and anywhere on the ship).

Port Reviews

Nuremberg

Excellent tour guide--a great city for walking

Regensburg

Another interesting small town. We did the optional excursion to the Weltenburg Abbey and the Danube Narrows; the ferry ride was fun and highlighted the beauty of the Danube.

Passau

This was an included excursion--an organ concert in the cathedral follow dbya walking tour.

Durnstein (Krems)

Could have used more time here. It's a beautiful location, high above the Danube.

Budapest

Excellent guide here--born and grew up in Budapest and talked a lot about its history.

Vienna

Beautiful views of the Danube

Vienna

It was a good walking tour though not the best we had. Part of that may be that a walking tour of the center of Vienna, which is huge, is hard to compare to a walking tour of downtown Nuremberg.
