There's nothing like taking a cruise in a warm climate during the middle of winter. We spent 10 days in the Caribbean in January 2017, eight of which were on board the Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Seas. Overall we had a very good time though, like all of our cruise vacations, there were many ups and some downs.

This was our fifth cruise, our second on Royal and our first to the Caribbean. We left Northern Virginia in the 20's and 30's for 10 days in the 70's and 80's, so that alone made for a great vacation.

As far as the ship is concerned, the Jewel is a newer and much nicer ship than our first Royal ship, the Grandeur of the Seas, though there were quite a few similarities. The passengers were mostly 50's and up, though there were a substantial number of 20-40 somethings and a couple of dozen little kids as well. Overall this was a much more sedate crowd than the Grandeur - a good thing. Similar to the Grandeur, the crew was as friendly and helpful as they could be. Our steward and waiters were excellent. Royal does a very good job training its staff. The food was very good overall, though a few dishes were disappointing. We ate our breakfasts and most lunches in the Windjammer buffet and were generally pleased with the variety and food quality. I particularly liked the generous seating area - much more spacious than we experienced on the Grandeur. We ate all our dinners in the Tides main dining room. We loved the rolls (as we did on the Grandeur) and most of the food though a few courses were not as good as we expected (my wife's eggplant parm, my Caprese salad).
