This was our first River Cruise of what we hope will be several. We cruised from Amsterdam to Basel and it was an A+ all around for Viking. The scenery along the Rhine was superb and with an included tour each morning we got a real feel for the cities that we docked at. Tour guides were very good in explaining the local culture and the history of the sights. The food onboard was excellent with quite a variety, servings sized properly so that we were not stuffed. Although we were travelling with friends, we met a lot of people and got to know them by name during the cruise. Most important thing is that it was totally RELAXING. Everything was take care of by the crew so that all we had to do was relax and enjoy. The cabin was very nice although we were hardly in it except to sleep. The cruise director, Boyan, was absolutely terrific. A great speaker with a good sense of humor. He briefed everyone the day before on what the coming day's itinerary would be and he was just a pleasure to be around. Only slight negative was that there was not a whole lot of time for retail therapy for the women. Best opportunity for that was at the stop in the Black Forest which had lots of handmade local crafts. Can't wait to take our next cruise.

Cabin Review

Cabin Cabin with balcony

Small as expected but very comfortable. The heated floor in the bathroom was a hit with all the women on board. We were in cabin 237, the last cabin, and thought we might have a problem with the engines but it was no problem. Slept with no problem at all.

Port Reviews

Heidelberg

My favorite port on the cruise. Beautiful castle ruins with a wonderful guided tour from the cruise line. The views from the castle were amazing and the town itself was great. Had a wonderful lunch at a local pub.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam was a wonderful city that we thoroughly enjoyed. We used the public transportation (tram) to get around without a problem. Look out for the bikes tho!

Basel

We stayed an extra two nights in Basel and enjoyed the town. Got a very good tour from the cruise line to show us the main sights. Do not miss the Paper Museum, especially if you have kids, although good for any age. Many hands on exhibits like making your own paper. As we had been told Basel is very expensive but you can get a deal on a Swiss Army Knife.
