This was an 8 day cruise leaving from Ft. Lauderdale and stopping at Nassau, Puerto Rico, Antigua and St. Kitts. We've been on many different lines - Princess, Carnival, Norwegian, Disney, but this was our first RC cruise. The boat was very nice and well maintained, the shops and main promenade were top notch, and the entertainment crew was great, but it was clear that most of RC’s crew didn't want to be there and hated their jobs. Their attitude and lack of effort and enthusiasm put a damper on an otherwise great vacation.
First some good - the pools, workout facilities, restaurants, cigar room, lounges and bars were all beautiful and well done. The food in the dining room was great, but the buffet was average at best. There's a Starbucks, Ben & Jerry's, a cupcake store and Johnny Rockets all on board, but all cost extra.
At dinner, our assistant to our waiter was about the worst I could imagine. She was horribly slow to bring drinks, refill drinks, clear plates, bring sauces/dressings to go over meals, etc. The first night we got our coffee well after dessert came. I could tell the head waiter and our waiter were very frustrated with her, and she later claimed this was her first cruise. We had a table of 12 and RC only assigned two people to work it AND another table of 12 behind us (and who knows how many other tables as well). It was too much for two good people, much less one good and one bad. Clearly, the dining room was understaffed. The food was generally very good, so that was a plus.
These cabins are tiny, with two bunks that lower from the ceiling. A normal cruise company would return them to the ceiling when cleaning the room and then lower them again at turn down so you could move about the cramped cabin easier, but not RC. They left them down the whole cruise and just tossed the ladders on the upper bunks during the day. The bathroom is very small, and the shower had insanely high water pressure - so high the sprayer would fly out of its holder like a firehose without a fireman. The so-called shampoo/conditioner combo is just cheap shampoo, so bring your own conditioner. They only give you bar soap instead of the liquid soap you get on other lines. The toilet broke twice as well, so that was fun.
They're rebuilding the terminal, so now it looks pretty spartan.
We've done San Juan before, and there's great history (two great fortresses) and great shopping walking distance from the boat. We found a few great cigar stores/lounges as well.
Antigua has some of the most beautiful white sand beaches in the Caribbean - 365 of them! We took a cab from the port for $3 per person to Fort James Beach, rented some chairs and an umbrella for $20 and had a great time. Pina Coladas were only $6 at their bar/restaurant, and you could do horseback riding as well from there.
We loved St. Kitts, it's a very beautiful island. We took a cab from the port for $4/pp to South Friar's Beach, which has great amenities, snorkeling either in the sea or in an adjacent cove (with no waves). In the cove we found a barracuda, all kinds of fish, sunken ship masts and even a $5 bill! Over in the sea, I saw a huge red starfish, eels, more fish and plenty of urchin. Took a picture with a monkey for $10 on the beach, had $3 local beers and rented two chairs and an umbrella for $30. Driver came back on time to get us back to the ship. Excellent beach, love the island.
