Sail Date: Dec 2016
Cabin: Standard Interior Stateroom

I recently had the opportunity to take some time for a vacation during the holidays and decided on a 9-day cruise on the newest ship in the Holland America Line fleet, the m.s. Koningsdam.

The sailing departed in December of 2016 from Port Everglades in Ft Lauderdale and returned just before Christmas. Over the 9 days the ship would visit the line's private Bahamian island of Half-Moon Cay, Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, Philipsburg, St. Maarten, Basseterre, St. Kitts, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Grand Turk Island in the Turks & Caicos.

Embarkation at Port Everglades was very organized and relaxing. We were dropped off by the entrance and porters immediately welcomed us and grabbed the luggage we would be checking. We had pre-printed and affixed the luggage tags provided by Holland America after the online check-in was completed.

Standard Interior Stateroom

Cabin J

Our group reserved 2 Interior Staterooms on the Sun Deck (Deck 11), the highest deck with staterooms on the ship. We had staterooms 11020 & 11024 - next to each other, though not connected.

My particular cabin was 11024 and, for two of us, was a fairly good amount of space. Included in our stateroom was a mini fridge with some space to add your own bottles you may have brought on board. On Holland America cruises you are allowed to bring 1 bottle of wine per person and all the water and carbonated drinks you can carry (not checked in your luggage) without a fee so long as you drink it in your stateroom.

Along with your mini fridge, you will enjoy a nice room layout with a flat screen television on the wall for great viewing from your bed. Many staterooms on other cruise ships have also included flatscreen tvs, though the angle has nearly always been off-center to the bed. You can enjoy very limited live television channels including MSNBC, CNBC, BBC, and ESPN, along with live video feeds facing forward and aft. The on-demand selection of television shows and movies is second to none… by far the best I have seen on a ship. I was pretty impressed. The selection offered fairly recent movies and network television shows from the major networks, including Game of Thrones and others.

The stateroom’s bathroom and shower were well laid out and spacious. The size of the shower was especially generous, for an interior cabin, with room for 2 (if you're so inclined) which is nice. I'll also admit that the shower head in the Koningsdam showers motivates me to change all the shower heads in my home to these exact same ones - they are soothing and delicious.

The toilets themselves aren't especially great, just normal I suppose. Perhaps they're a bit small. Nothing major of note here except that for a number of days our section of the ship experienced some trouble with flushing the toilets. At first I thought it was just our stateroom, but it soon became apparent that we weren't the only ones having issues. The problems were fixed and I figure random problems like that can happen anytime, so it's not something a future passenger should really worry about.

The bedding is especially plush with 4 pillows (along with 2 decorative pillows) providing for some excellent naps / sleep.
