Some context: My parents and I were introduced to Holland America Line (and cruising itself) about 8 years ago and we instantly fell in love with their luxurious and incredible level of service, hospitality, and cuisine. Our maiden voyage was aboard the Volendam followed by two cruises on the Noordam, one on Westerdam, and most recently on the newly built Koningsdam. Prior to this most recent cruise, I went on my first cruise with Royal Caribbean aboard the Allure of the Seas (which was incredible by the way). I will be using my time with Royal Caribbean in addition to my experience with Holland America in forming this review.

To say we were excited for this cruise would be an understatement. It had been several years since our last family vacation aboard a HAL vessel and the opportunity to cruise on the line's newest and largest ship for a discounted price was too good to pass up. Unfortunately, aside from the aesthetic improvements of the ship itself, which was the sole product of the ship being in its inaugural season, this cruise was a huge downgrade from Holland America Line cruises of the past and even from Royal Caribbean standards (despite HAL being considered a more "luxury" line).

Don't get me wrong here, the ship and cruise itself weren't a total bust. There were some positive additions to the layout of the ship that were much appreciated. For example, all sorts of Italian couches, recliners, and lounge chairs were added to the many lounges and pool areas. They were well placed and numerous enough that you wouldn't spend the duration of your vacation trying to fight your way to one. The movie theater was also removed and replaced by movie night in the Lido Pool where the loungers were converted into movie theater recliners complete with a blanket, pillow, and popcorn. A second level was also added to the pool deck in the back of the ship which offered additional areas for sunbathing and capturing beautiful shipside views. There was also the notable addition of a Culinary Arts Center and BLEND which offered everything from wine and whiskey tastings to cooking and cocktail-making classes presented by celebrity chefs and the ship's own staff (no one in my party partook in these classes unfortunately so I have no input on whether they're worth the extra cost or not) If this had been my first cruise then I would have no doubt been pleasantly surprised by all of these features in addition to the hospitality and outstanding service of the crew, the ambiance of the indoor and outdoor areas of the ship, and the fantastic cuisine.

Verandah Stateroom

Cabin V

Much improved compared to the older ships. New flatscreen TV was a great feature, especially with the myriad of free to watch shows and movies available on it. New ship, again, so the stateroom wasn't at all squeaky and everything was in tip top shape. Only major drawback of the room was that you could hear EVERYTHING in the neighboring suite due to a door connecting the two suites. I'm assuming there are some stateroom options that don't have this door at all so you won't have a problem dealing with potentially noisy neighbors.

Port Reviews

Half Moon Cay

Excellent island, beautiful weather, BBQ on the beach. Fantastic as always, no complaints.

Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Fabulous as always.

Tortola

Walked around the downtown area. We got here on a Saturday however so most of the shops were closed. Definitely recommend taking an excursion or going to the beach with this one cuz there really isn't much to do downtown nor is it particularly scenic.

San Juan

One of my favorite ports of call. There is so much to do in this city that it can be a destination vacation in and of itself. Absolutely breathtaking city, visually and historically. My only complaint is that we never have enough time in this port!

St. Martin

Lovely downtown area, good shopping, with an nice beach just outside the ship.

Grand Turk

Lovely island. My biggest regret is not taking a snorkeling excursion here as I here the snorkeling here is some of the finest and while you are more that able to snorkle from the beach, there really isn't much to see unfortunately unless you go further out.
