Got an excellent price for the three of us in a balcony stateroom, so had to give it a go. Always wanted to try Costa so this seemed like a good opportunity.
Our tickets said borading would commence around 1PM so we arrived at the pier at 11:45 so we could check in and be ready to board and head for the sun beds. Instead we spent the day in the terminal. Doors to terminal opened at 1PM, we were checked in by 2PM and boarding commenced around 3PM. We walked across the gangway at approx. 4PM. We received our boarding numbers at check in, but no numbers were called. Awful start to the week.
Headed directly to the buffet since we were starved. Italian lunch it said, but was very poor. Meat was dry and tough, pasta was overcooked and it was generally barely edible. We got the first sitting for 6:15 and shared a table with two Danes for the rest of the week. We were five people at a table for eight. That is nice isnt it? We tried to get our own table for Christmas dinner but that wasn’t possible, even though we saw lots of table free.
All week, we received poor service in the MDR. Drinks: If we ordered a bottle of wine, the waiter poured the first glass and the sat the bottle at the table, no refills were done. Had to ask for a cooler and ice three times the first night. Had to pour our own water, and if I ordered soda, he placed an un-opened can at the table. I would at least expect him to open it and pour a bit. He was very busy each night having 7 large tables alone with no assisting waiters. Cost cutting big time. Food in the MDR were mostly mediocre with a few good dished, and some times really inedible dishes.
Costa does not have any pizza in the buffet, you are forced to pay 6,50 euros for it in the pizzeria. Pizza tastes good but beer was served in plastic glasses. Not very nice.
There were constant queues around the ship, and always at least 30 minutes wait time at the pursers desk.
Cleanliness of the ship wasnt too good with lots of dust in many many places. The decor of the ship is really tacky too with lots of bright colours.
Bar staff were quick but often mixed up orders.
Some of the shows were pretty good, others were not so. There wasn’t much else going on around the ship, day or night.
We wanted to remove the daily gratuities since we received such poor service. Only Germans and Americans were able to do so.
During the week we visited:
Cozumel, docked: Did an excursion to Chicen Itza which was pretty good.
Belize City, tender: We waited 2,5 hrs for our tender which is insane! Took a city tour which was interesting, then walked around on our own.
Roatan, Honduas, docked: Weather was poor so just had a short walk around the tourist village and beach.
Grand Cayman, tender: Tender were quicker here, only 1,5 hrs wait time. Expensive shopping, just a quick lunch then back onboard.
Overall, Costa did not take good care of us, and we will not recommend Costa to our friends, nor will we probably not book them again. A lot have to change before we may try again, mainly customer service.
Large cabin even with an extra bed. Very comfortable beds. Lots of sockets. Awful choice of colours of the bathroom. Draining were very poor. Lots of dust in certain areas.
We had a great guide who really took care of us and gave us every bit of information we needed.View All 425 Mayan Ruins Reviews
Very interesting and informative city tour.
Embarkation and disembarkation was really really bad.
