We have travelled with Hurtigruten on three previous occasions, always on the coastal voyage, which is from Bergen to Kirkenes and back to Bergen. We have travelled twice in February and once over Christmas and decided to enjoy the full round trip for Christmas 2016.
We are well aware of the nature of the journey, which is not to be compared with other large cruise companies. We go for the scenery and the Winter light - it is never totally dark in the day, even at Kirkenes - and the magic of the Aurora.
We always select rooms with balconies and, because these are limited on Hurtigruten ships, we treat ourselves to one of the suites. On Spitsbergen, there are two at the stern and another two on each side, but those have very narrow balconies. Our balcony, with room 637, not only gave a wonderful, spacious and sheltered stern view but also extended round the side of the ship a short distance.

The suites offer plenty of space and "extras" in the shape of thick towelling bath robes which are yours to keep, a wine package and stocked mini bar, among others. One problem was with the shower in the spacious and well-appointed bathroom, which did not drain properly when the ship was tied up in dock because of the angle of the ship, causing flooding despite damming the door with towels!
