We had planned on this cruise for about a year and was able to reserve a "handicap" room which allowed more room to move about and maneuver the wheelchair without having to constantly open/close it. Our flight to FLL was uneventful and the transfer to the port went smoothly. All was going well until we got to the gangplank and found a line of wheelchair ridden passengers "patiently" waiting to be transferred. The non-wheelchair member was not allowed to move the wheelchair up the gangplank, for one reason or another. So, after about twenty minutes waiting, a staff member showed up and we were taken onboard, only to be told we had to wait again for someone to take us to the "Windjammer" dining area on the 11th deck! Never exactly figured it out, but we took it in stride, more or less. We no longer use the dining room and prefer the "food court" buffet, and the food there was varied and filling. The cruise itself went very well with only minor problems: on the sixth deck you have to pass through the casino to get to the stern/bow and this area was not designed to handle wheelchairs, so every trip through there was an adventure. Not much handicap area in the main theater or the cinema either. If there was a "sale" going on in the shop area, being in a wheelchair could be a challenge
The "Solarium", an adults-only area, oftentimes had children running loose, and apparently RCI still has a problem enforcing their, "No chair saving" rule, but we were able to find a place to relax more often than not We were told the "Serenade" will be going into dry dock at the end of 2017 for the latest updates.
Entertainment was pretty much the same as on any other cruise/ship.
This was a handicap accessible room and was very spacey. Our cabin steward, Harlam, was very helpful in bringing in some roll-away bed mattresses to try and help wit a back problem I developed the day before the cruise. He saw to our every need and was available whenever we needed him. The one down-side to the room was, which I believe was noise created on two of the last three nights on board when, this is my best guess, they decided to use pressure washers on the fifth deck, for about 45-minutes at a time, ending around 0130 in the morning. When I discussed this with "passenger services", I was told I needed to contact them when the noise was being made so they could find the source! To me, it was a simple issue. Were they running pressure washers on the port side of the fifth deck and did they shut it off at 0130. Oh well, I was already awake with my back!
Didn't realize we had visited this island a couple years earlier until "Eric Clapton's " home was pointed out to us! Still enjoyable .
Great scenery.
Great scenery and lots and lots of hills!
Volcanic area, big rock formations, Atlantic coast.
