  3. Jewel of the Seas
We are experienced cruisers over the last 20 years. We have been on the Jewel before doing the cruise to the Southern Caribbean. I am retired but my wife is still working. We like to get away from Boston and head to the Caribbean. Jet Blue does a great job in getting us from Logan airport to San Juan. The connections by RCI to get us to the boat are always good. We got to the boat by late afternoon and found the room ready and our luggage there in the evening. Getting onboard was easy and fast. The Departure went well also. Some food at the Windjammer and off to the required Welcome Aboard Rules and Equipment meeting. That was done in a bar area which means we can sit inside not wait on an outer deck. I have bad knees and love that treatment. We headed to the MDR and were seated with 6 others. Once we were seated one of the diners shouted out loud that she wanted on Spanish spoken at the table. That made us feel very uncomfortable and we left before dessert. This isn't the first time for that issue. During the Thanksgiving holiday prices are dropped in the local area. You will see other comments over the years relating to this issue. We like to cruise out of San Juan because we like more active cruises and fewer days at sea. The Jewel is smaller than many ships at 91K tons. We were the only ship in port in many cases and got special attention as a result. The excursions are less crowded and the ports have fewer travelers competing to attention. If you enjoy the Day At Sea you may want to try the bigger ships offering more things to do onboard. The rooms on Jewel has smaller rooms so we upgraded to JS 1080. The extra 100sf make a big difference. The room was great. Percival did a great job cleaning the place and delivering the towel animals for a smile. The ship was refurbished earlier this year. She looks like new both inside and out. The MDR was just OK. We did My Time dining and the service was very good. The menu was just OK. Professionally prepared and delivered but not much to get excited about. One evening we got bored with the MDR menu and headed for the Windjammer. That was a pleasant surprise. Diamond Lounge- We love the free drinks we get as Diamond level travelers. The lounge was redesigned but not for the better. Sergei was the Concierge and was very helpful. He got our Boarding Passes on the return flight which helps a lot. There were three waiters who had a long trip to get the drinks. They also were not bartenders and had difficulty getting the drinks right. This needs to be reorganized. Theater. Production shows didn't have great themes but the cast made it work. The AlleyCats were great. St Croix. We got rained out here and that rain impacted the rest of the week. We love the tour to Buck Island and were very disappointed. St Martin. Very disappointed. We took RCI tour to Orient Beach w/lunch. Food was not the quality we are used to. The only chairs and shades available for us were on the nude part of the beach. We will not go back here. Dominica. Booked the RCI excursion to do Champagne snorkeling and loved it. Crew did a great job. One dove down to the champagne ( underwater bubbles from volcanic source) and brought some up so we could test the temperature. It's hot! Barbados. Took the RCI excursion with Tiami 5 Star to swim with Turtles. The earlier storm left the underwater cloudy. There was only one turtle. We were told the prior day there were no turtles. Still a nice trip on a big Cat with a very good crew. Granada. Booked tubing via RCI. Due to an earlier mudslide the trip to the site took over an hour. The tubing lasted less than a half hour. Then we did the long return trip. Good crew here but not a great experience. MEET n Mingle. We got there 15 minutes late. The cruise director was already shutting down. There was a spread of food untouched and lots of coffee that was not used. We were disappointed. Other cruises worked at making this a chance to meet others but this was just done in a rush. Overall a good vacation. Trip back went well with the Patriots on the TV on Jet Blue. We booked our next cruise while on the trip. We will try the Baltic on RCI next summer.

The Jewel looks new again.
