This was both mine and my husband's first time on the Sunshine. I wasn't quite sure as what to expect, given I'd only previously sailed with Carnival on the Fantasy. The size of the ship was decent. Not overwhelming, nor did I feel crammed into the ship with 3,000 other people.
The only real issue I had were the amount of kids who were running through the ship. I know cruises will have children and that's fine (I'm a mother of 2, myself), however the amount of kids who were unsupervised was a little shocking. Kids easily as young as 9, 10 years old left to do whatever on the ship was a little concerning. Most of the children were not exactly polite, either.
We made 3 of our 4 scheduled ports, missing Grand Turk due to high winds. I could understand why some people would have been irritated about missing the port but after my husband explained why we couldn't dock, it made sense. We had great weather in Amber Cove and San Juan, but it rained all day in St. Thomas.
The cabin felt a little small but understandable due to it being made for only 2 passengers. The toilet kept having issues where it wouldn't flush. There was not a lot of storage space at all, either. It was in a good location on the ship, though.
The check in for Platinum guests is easily the best check in experience I've ever had!
Gorgeous port
We didn't take an excursion through Carnival. Instead, we got off the ship and decided to walk to the Castillo de San Felipe, about a 20 minute walk from the cruise terminal. Gorgeous area, wild iguanas and feral cats. The water was gorgeous. It was quite lovely.
