We sailed on Splendour of the Seas May 16, 2009 from Venice. We were scheduled to stop in Split, Croatia, and then several Greek ports. There were 4 in our cabin (2 adults and a 6/9 year old). My parents were in another cabin. We had a great time the first night. Staff were friendly, food was good, ship appeared to be in good condition. At our first port of call, Split, Croatia just as the ship was scheduled to depart we were paged to the medical facility. It turns out that my father (69 years old) had a massive heart attack on the dock while walking back to the ship. We heard the "Code Oscar" from the dining room a few minutes earlier (he collapsed on the dock and fell into the water). The ship was in a hurry to leave, so we were all (nicely) hurried off the ship. The cruise line provided us with an English speaking taxi driver at our disposal. The cruise line took care of making sure we did everything properly with the authorities - and their taxi driver helped us interact with the mortuary, pathologist, etc. They put us in a very nice (5 star) hotel for 3 nights while we took care of everything. They even hired us a taxi to drive us all the way back to Venice so that we could catch our return flight (about 500 miles). After all of this, the only thing they charged us for was the actual medical expenses for the ship's doctor and nurse (less than $2,000). We did not have travel insurance but Royal Caribbean took great care of us at their expense. They even refunded 100% of our cruise for both our cabin and my mother's cabin. I can't say enough positive things about them. I hope nobody ever has to lose a loved one on a cruise, but rest assured that Royal Caribbean has a dedicated and compasionate staff that will make it much easier on you if it ever does happen. We are thankful for everything they did for us and dread thinking about what it would have been like if it happened without the support of the cruise line (if, for example, it happened the night before the cruise in Venice). If you read negative comments about RC and their medical staff, or any other staff, please take them with a grain of salt and realize what a fantastic experience we had when it really counted... We will never use any other cruise line again. RC has earned our business for life.
