We have just returned from our Med cruise on board the Costa Diadema.

We have previously sailed with Cunard, NCL, Carnival and Royal Caribbean.

Overall, we enjoyed our first cruise with Costa. The Diadema is a large ship and it took us most of the holiday to find our way around.

We were very impressed with the cleanliness of the ship, one of the cleanest ships we have sailed on both inside and out.

Obviously, as an Italian ship, it was very stylish and we were impressed with all the public areas.

The majority of passengers on board were either Italian or Spanish. As English passengers, we were in the minority but this didn't trouble us really.

Our restaurant waitress, Jane was fantastic and was very attentive at all times. Despite being rushed off her feet serving other tables. However, we found some of the other staff not quite so helpful. Guest relations particularly.

The food on board was somewhat of a mixture. The lunchtime and evening meals were excellent. This being an Italian ship, the breakfast choice was largely continental. We found that the cooked breakfast was only available in the restaurant. Some of our cooked breakfasts were served not very hot and had to be returned. In addition, it was quite a challenge to get boiling water for a decent cup of tea.

Unlike some other cruise lines we have previously sailed with, Costa charge for room service which we found disappointing.

One of the main issues we had was the apparent lack of any dress code during the evenings. We noticed that other passengers in the restaurant and public areas were wearing jeans, t shirts, baseball caps and trainers. Personally, I think that Costa should be stricter regarding the dress code in future.

Being a family friendly ship, most of the public areas were very lively. It would have been nice if there had been a quiet bar to retire to in the evenings, just for the adults.

Gratuities are mandatory with Costa, which we personally disagreed with. In the past, we have chosen to pay however much we could afford.

The drinks package we had was good value and I would recommend purchasing a package before embarkation.

In summary, our cruise on board Costa Diadema was generally very enjoyable. It was certainly not the best cruise we have ever been on, but we would sail with Costa again in the future.

I would certainly not recommend it however, if you're looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday, as this is a ship that is aimed more towards families.

Cabin Review

Classic Balcony
Cabin BC 2140

Our balcony cabin was excellent. Very clean and lots of space.

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

Palma de Mallorca (Majorca)

Nice port, although not enough shuttle buses waiting on standby by the ship.

Rome (Civitavecchia)

Fairly long commute into Rome. I would advise taking a taxi if in a party.

Best port in the itinerary. Easy walk into town, very pretty.

The port is industrial and not very pleasant. About 15 minute drive from Marseille.

The harbour area is okay but the town appears to be in decline.
